The Great Depression

The Great Depression

September

On September 3, 1929  the stock market reached it’s peak and started to decrease.

Black Thursday

The stock maket plummted and thousand of people were trying to sell their stocks. The stocks fell 11%. Many romurs were going around that many people where commiting suicide. All of the panic ended around noon. When a group of banker pooled a large amount of their money back into the stock market.

And by the end of the day many people were selling and buying stocks again. 12.9 million share’s where solded double the pervious record. But no one thought that the stock market would fall four days later.

Black Monday

The stock fell 12.8% more. Many people started to learn that the banks invested their money in wall street. Many people rushed to their banks to pull all of their money out. The banks then only gave out 10 cents for every dollar that a person put in. Many people losted their live savings. Banks went bankrupted. Business counldn’t get loans. And people could not by houses.

Black Tuesday

October 29, 1929 the U.S had the biggest stock crash in the history of the stock market. It is name is “Black Tuesday”. “Black Tuesday” is the day that the American stock market collapse. Many people were trying to sell all of the stocks that they had.

Many people were in a panic because they could not sell all of their stocks fast enough. They couldn’t sell all of their stocks because with everyone selling no one is buying the stocks that the people are trying to sell. All of the prices for the stocks collapsed. Panic hit all the people in the country.

14 billion dollars were lost in one day. Thousand of investor got wiped out. The stock tickers ran behind by two hours and a half. 16.4 million stocks were sold that day braking the record.

The stocks did begin to declind months before “Black Tuesday”. Many people losted all of the money that they put into the banks. Many people lost their jobs and houses. Many people became homeless and it was a common thing to see people sleeping on park benchs with their families.

Causes Of The Great Depression

There where five causes that helped to play a roll in the Great Depression. The first cause was the stock market. The American stock market collapse. 14 billion dollars where losted in one day. It was the start of the American people losing 40 billion dollars in the following months.

The second reason of the Great Depression is the bank failures. People and the banks had really poor investment pratices. The amount of money that the customers would pull out from the bank. And the loss of money from “Black Tuesday”.

The third cause of the Great Depression was consumerism. The lack of demands of the goods and services. The unemployment rose and the consumer capital then fell. There was less consumer capital which then lead to a greater decrease in the demands for goods and the services.

The fourth cause of the Great Depression was the Foreign Tariff. The tariff that American taxed on imported or exported goods. It ugred American to consumers to buy American products. The damge that it made on the economy and esecially the agriculture.

The five and final cause of the Great Depression is the drought or in other words the Economic Impact. Many individuals were unable to pay their taxes. Many people were impacted on the defaulted on paying back the loans. And the banks loss lots of money on the loans that could not be payed back.

Tornadoes

Tornadoes

Tornadoes

Tornadoes are formed from thunderstorms, you need warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and cool dry air from Canada. When those two air masses meet, they create a instability atmosphere. Rising the air within the draft tilts the rotating the air from horizontal to vertical.

Southeast Tornadoes

In Dixie Alley, tornadoes are harder to spot and occurs at night. Unlike the plain where the tornadoes can be seen from miles away, you can’t spot the tornadoes in the south because of the rugged terrain and it has more trees there. Which makes it difficult to spot a tornado. Lots of the tornadoes that occur in the area, are rain-wrapped so they are less visible to the eye.

Lots of the tornadoes there move faster and stay on the ground longer, because they are pushed with a stronger jet stream which results with a faster moving storm. It’s not uncommon for the tornadoes there to move upward of 50 miles per hour.

Is It Hard To Live In A Place With Tornadoes Like That?

It’s hard to live there because with how fast the tornadoes are going, and how the tornadoes come up at night. The people there are most likely to be sleep when the tornadoes happen. It ends up putting more pressure on the forecaster because, they have to get the information out to the public in enough time that the public can react to the warning.

Nashville residents have only minutes to react before the tornadoes hit their home. Many house there don’t have a basement there or a underground shelter.

Densely Populated

The southeast are densely populated, which means more death there. As you move east from Kansas to Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, the population increases rapidly. They also have a problem with more mobile house. If you get hit in a mobile home, you are more likely to get killed. You have a unique exposure, and vulnerability problem in a mobile home.

Even though there are more tornadoes in Tornado Alley then in Dixie Alley, there has been more deaths in Dixie then in Tornado because Dixie Alley has a more populated area.

Tornado In Southeast Area

The tornadoes that hit in Tennessee on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 hours after midnight killed at least 24 people some of them in bed asleep. The tornadoes, destroyed 140 building there in Tennessee and buried many people in rubble and wrecked basements. The tornadoes came at such a fast speed, that if anyone was in the way of the tornadoes they wouldn’t have enough time to get away from the tornadoes.

The government send out many search and rescue team to the area of the tornadoes. They found 25 people died and a number of people missing. When morning came they found blown down walls, flattened home, building, and business, with broken power lines, and snapped trees making the roads and street impassable.

In one neighborhood volunteers found five bodies, and they are still looking for two more bodies.

One of the people there in Nashville in the time of the tornadoes stated that, “ The dogs started to bark before the sirens went off. They knew what was coming,” said Paula Wade, of east Nashville.

Roofs came crashing down on many people, when they were just waking up to the sirens. Many people got trapped inside, but were able to find a way out of their houses. Mike Stephens woke up to a tree falling through his roof.

Gov. Bill Lee said that he saw many people going to peoples aid and help out one another. He said “ In the worst circumstances, the best of people comes out, and that’s what we’re seeing,” he said.

In Nashville, the tornadoes hit mostly north and east of the heart of downtown. The tornadoes spared many of the towns tourist attracts. The twister decided to hit and destroy the largely African American of Bordeaux .and North Nashville, and neighborhoods.

Many Nashville residents walk around on the sidewalks, that are littered with trash and parts of peoples homes. They are able to look into peoples house. With missing walls, and missing roofs you can easily look into peoples kitchen and into peoples living rooms.

The National Weather Services said that the tornadoes inflicted the east part of Tennessee. They also decided that the infliction of the tornadoes was at least a EF-3 intensity, the agent said.

One of the twister destroyed homes, and buildings a crossed a 10-mile stretch. The tornadoes, inflicted three dozen buildings some of it including the tower, and stained glass of a historic church. One of the other tornadoes destroyed 100 structures, along a 2 mile stretch. The tornadoes wiped away houses and brought the wreckage far away.

What Was The Chicago Murder Castle

What Was The Chicago Murder Castle?

The Chicago Murder Castle was back in 1893 when Chicago was preparing to host the World Fair. It was a hotel that a man named Herman Mudgett but now known as H.H Holmes, designed and he called it ¨The Castle¨. This hotel was a place where Holmes killed hundreds of people and was named Americans first serial killer.

How Was The Hotel Designed?

The hotel was designed with many trap door, dead ends, narrow corridors, rooms were scattered among oddly angled, poor lighting, with widely spaced gas jet on the walls, stairways that lead nowhere, hidden closets with sliding panes locked doors that Holmes only had the key to, and a large greased shafted that lead straight down to a cellar. It also was designed with three floors: the basement/cellar, the main floor, and the second floor.

What Was On The Second Floor?

The second floor was confusing it had 51 doors, six hallways, 35 bedchambers, but some were airtight and lined with asbestos coated steel plates or soundproof. Some of them had low ceilings and were no bigger than closets. Most of the rooms were rigged with gas pipes. Many had alarms that would sound if the guest tried to escape. It also contained trapdoor, secret passageways, hidden closets with sliding panes, and a shaft that lead straight down to the cellar.

What Was On The Main Floor?

The main floor was open to the public. It was nice and there was a counter where people would check-in and get keys to their rooms. It had bathrooms. It had chairs and tables. It also had the front door of the hotel on that level.

What Was In The Basement/Cellar?

The basement/cellar was bricked lined and dark it was like a dungeon. What happened down there was terror. He kept many things down there like acid tanks, quicklime vats, dissecting tables and surgeon cabinets and Holmes own invention at would stretch to twice their normal height. When the police found this they compared it to medieval torture racks.

How Many Victims Did He Have And How Did He Get Them?

Holmes claimed that he murdered 28 people but, the believed number of victims that he had was as many as 200 people. He had two ways that he used to lure people to the hotel the first one was lodging to world tourists. The second one was that he would place adds in the town’s newspapers, that said that he was offering jobs to young women or offering himself for marriage. With the World Fair and unsophisticated police procedure missing people were barely investigated. When it was investigated the police found a human-size kiln that heated up to 3000 degrees Fahrenheit and they found a wooden box containing several female skeletons.

How Did It End?

Holmes was arrested twice in 1894 for insurance fraud. Frank P. Geyer was the investigator of Philadelphia. He slowly started to uncover Holmes disturbing crimes. That lead to the Chicago Police investigation. They quickly learned what Holmes was doing. His trial was then held in Philadelphia just before Halloween in 1895. The trial lasted six days in length. Holmes stated in the trial.

¨I was born with the devil in me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than the poet can help the inspiration to sing ¨.

Many people throughout the country and in Chicago were horrified that Holmes confessed to how he torture and murder people. Holmes even after he talked to two Catholic priests, and Holmes still refused to ask for forgiveness. Holmes was hanged May 7, 1896, nine days before his thirty-sixth birthday. After Holmes was hanged his heart continued to beat for fifteen minutes before stopping.

Two weeks after Holmes was hanged, a man by the name of A.M. Clark bought the Castle. He reopened it as a tourist attraction. But, on Aug. 19 at 12:13 a.m. a railroad night watchmen saw that the Castle roof was up in flames. Seconds later, an explosion blew out the first-floor windows.

The fire was out of control by the time help arrived and the Castle. Ninety minutes after the fire was reported the roof collapsed. They were able to save the first floor which served as a sign shop and book store until it was sold in 1937 and the building was wiped away to make room for a U.S post office which still stands there today.

Holmes legacy did not die with him though. Years after Holmes died the people who had dealings with Holmes came to strange and violent endings.

The last one to die died two full decades after the death of Holmes. It was Pat Quinlan the Castle caretaker. He committed suicide on March 7, 1914. The day after Pat’s death the headlines read ¨HOLMES CASTLE SECRET DIES.¨ Relatives claim that the months before Pat committed suicide he seemed to be haunted and could not sleep.
