Music and It’s Impact

Music and It’s Impact

If you have had a bad day what do you turn to? Do you go to music, video games, friends, or family?

Very Well Mind did a survey that shows 97% of people turn to music to help with mental health and/or bad days.

Music has an impact on everyone that is incomparable, whether it is the artist or listeners. Music is an outlet that is needed to all humans because it gives you that chance to express yourself when you don’t have the words.

Music is more than just words and a melody but it’s emotion and pain and love and everything you can feel. It’s a mirror of the real you that you sometimes hide whether you mean to or not. Music is an outlet to emotions and a glass window to one’s soul.

Many people don’t realize how many genres and artists there truly are because we focus on pop, rock, hip-hop/rap, electronic, R&B and soul, classical, jazz, blues, and country but there are over 1,300 music genres on Spotify and many more undiscovered. On Spotify alone there are an estimated 11 million musical artists, many just lesser known but still just as good as the more popular ones.

Music is the story of the artists and the mirror of the listeners. Whether people realize it or not the music you listen to tells a lot about your personality and story. Everyone has a unique story and music is a part of the story because it’s how you’ve handled your experiences and what’s helped you.

Music Artist Stray Kids’ Story

Whether you’ve heard of them or not, Stray Kids are a popular and revolutionary 4th generation K-pop band. They’ve gone through many hardships from the leader training for 7 years and leaving his home in Australia alone at the age of 13 to do so to a member leaving only 1 year 7 months and 2 days after debut.

They also produce and write their own music, giving them a different music style compared to the ‘normal’ standards and were the first ever k-pop group where all members were picked by the leader specifically. Because of all these reasons and many more they were considered the company’s flop group and failures but, despite not debuting popular, they used their story in their music and even won MTV’s 2023 VMA award show for best K-pop group.

They expressed their gratitude towards fans by making song specifically for the fandom (STAY) such as #LoveSTAY, Grow Up, Youtiful, You Can STAY, For You, Silent Cry, and I am You. They wrote songs for each other and to show their genuine happiness with the group such as the songs Can’t Live Without Changbin (only found on YouTube), Behind The Light, Fam, and Broken Compass. They used their music to express their confidence towards the group, not caring what others or anti-fans think, with songs like Haven, Easy, 3RACHA, Domino, Cheese, Thunderous, and Wolfgang. They used their music to get out their stories, past, and feelings with the songs Hellevator, Spread My Wings, Mirror, 19, Voices, One Day, and Secret Secret.

The point is, Stray Kids are a prime example of why music is so important. They show us that music is an outlet for emotions and feelings. They write these songs so they can express themselves and their fans just connect to it because of their genuineness with themselves and the music they make.

One of the powerful quotes they use in the song Spread My Wings is “My eyes went from sneakers to dress shoes Days that used to feel long now feel so short As soon as the bell rang for break time I used to run to the food cart But now, my footsteps are pitiful and trembling…It was nice when I acted like an adult But I don’t wanna change, even if they say I’m immature Even if I’m bad at it, I like the word, beginning It’s foolish but i’m still young.” This song talks about having to grow up eventually so they acted like an adult before they actually grew up but now that they have to they would rather stay young and act immature. I feel like, especially in today’s world, everyone is growing up too fast and this song is relatable to those who were in similar positions. This is only one of the many songs they have written with powerful and/or relatable and deep quotes.

Closing

All in all, music connects people in ways like no other thing can. It’s the invisible string attaching us to each other that we don’t see but we feel.

Shatter Me Book Review

Shatter Me Book Review

Have you heard of the book series Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi? Well, it’s a dystopian romance published on November 15th, 2011 and whether you have heard of it or not this is a complete breakdown and honest review of why I think you should read the series.

The Plot

When it comes to the novel’s setting, there is no way I’ll ever fully understand the actual world that the author created. I know that it takes place in an area that fell to a takeover and that now a new government has taken control, and a rebellious group is hoping to rise and fight against the new government that is currently in place. All of this somehow managed to happen within the little while that Juliette was locked up, which is where Shatter Me starts. This means that she doesn’t necessarily understand the world around her when she ends up free.

I’ve never been a massive fan of the guy-falling-first plot solely because authors who write from a female character’s point of view and have the love interest fall first often do it too quickly, making it feel like Cinderella all over again. What I mean by that is in Cinderella, Prince Charming falls for her even though he barely knows her, and this becomes some undying love. I know this isn’t real life, but it still gets on my nerves when love occurs at first sight without knowing who the love interest is. So when I started reading Shatter Me, I was annoyed that the main character almost immediately had two men all over her, sparking up a love triangle in a matter of chapters. This, although it wasn’t my favorite thing, was actually what kept me so invested in the first book.

Although Tahereh Mafi does try to explain why the initial love interest fell so quickly for Juliette, expressing that he had known her since she was little. This knocked my annoyed self out of the ballpark as I no longer had any reason to complain about the character’s ‘sudden’ love for the main character. Still, with the other love interest, Tahereh keeps the reasons for his quickly growing affection hidden. I didn’t understand his reasons for loving the main character so suddenly until I finished Shatter Me and began reading the novella from Warner’s point of view during the first book. The novella helped me understand his character better. I was 100% on his side during every following conflict because I had dealt with so much of the needed information through the novella. I’ve never enjoyed novellas in the past. However, the novella that came with Shatter Me was extremely helpful and kept me engaged in the story line. I strongly encourage readers to try the novellas along with the novel if they choose to continue the series beyond the first book.

The Characters

The main character, Juliette, can most definitely get on my nerves from time to time, but I think that makes her realistic. We readers never truly acknowledge that the main characters make mistakes along with side characters because we have some idea that the main characters should only follow the path that we want them to follow. I honestly loved Juliette through the first novel because she seemed to have every reason to be acting the way she was.

Over time, however, she can get tiring. In the second novel, Unravel Me, she is constantly whining and whimpering, throwing major temper tantrums when things in her life aren’t perfect. This is a problem with the second novel, but at the same time, it carries the plot along and leads to other things that kept me warped in the pages of the book. When I reached the second book’s ending, I was worried that she just had a whiny personality, but that concern went away with her massive character development within the first few chapters of the third book, Ignite Me.

Everyone has mixed views on the characters in Shatter Me. I don’t know exactly who I would choose if someone asked me to pick a favorite character from this series. However, I love the character placed later in the book – Kenji. He seems to have been brought in as a ‘best friend’ for Juliette, and he’s hilarious. As the story went on he became one of my favorite characters in the books due to his odd, yet funny, personality.

The only character I genuinely disliked was Adam. He’s your basic initial love interest who spouts sappy lines and wants to make everything about himself. I strongly disliked Adam due to his constant overreacting and, especially in Unravel and Ignite Me, he was way too annoying, but over time I came to like him. Just like Juliette, Adam had a pretty strong character development and later I didn’t hate him so much, but he is still nowhere close to my favorite character.

Oppositely from my views on Adam, Warner is fantastic. His lines are so great, and his character background is revealed more and more over time, making him more admirable. I don’t know how to explain why I love Warner so much without spoiling anything in the books, but he just puts a smile on my face by appearing in a scene. The characters in Shatter Me have fantastic development and depth, making the books worth reading.

 The Language/Writing Style

A page of the book with the words 'I am not insane' written and crossed out 145 times
Shatter Me ‘I am not insane’ page in chapter 4

The writing style in the books is so unique. For example, Juliette’s point of view shows her conflicting inner thoughts. As words appear on the pages, things she’s thinking or wishes to say show up, but she denies her thoughts and keeps her intended words to herself. This is shown by the horizontal lines crossing out the words on the paper. I love this because the author put so much thought into it; the title of the book is Shatter Me, and the words in the book are shattered. This is a writing style I had never encountered before, and I thought it would annoy me when starting the book, but it made it so much more enjoyable.

Also, another positive aspect in the writing is the constant use of analogies and metaphors coming from the narrator, Juliette. Her character shows so much depth from the beginning, as the author unravels Juliette’s obsession with numbers and her struggles to figure herself out.

 Final Thoughts

I completely agree with most of the complaints that Shatter Me has received overtime, but I still believe that the positive factors in the books strongly outweigh the negatives. I strongly encourage everyone to try to continue reading Shatter Me. Especially those who are looking for a more romance-based dystopian novel.

Book Quotes:

  • Some people are born with tornadoes in their lives, but constellations in their eyes.”
  • “My words are unerring tools of destruction, and I’ve come unequipped with the ability to disarm them.”
  • “Hope in this world bleeds out of the barrel of a gun.”
  • “One word, two lips, three four five fingers form a fist. One corner, two parents, three four five reasons to hide. One child, two eyes, three four seventeen years of fear. A broken broomstick, a pair of wile faces, angry whispers, locks on my door.”
  • “Hate looks just like everybody else until it smiles. Until it spins around and lies with lips and teeth carved into the semblance of something too passive to punch.”

Stray Kids: The Most Genuine Artists

Stray Kids: The Most Genuine Artists

Have you ever seen a band who genuinely loved making music, each other, and their fans? Well, let me introduce you to the Korean band Stray Kids who debuted on March 25th, 2018.

This group consists of 8 members: Bang Chan, Lee Know (Minho), Seo Changbin, Hwang Hyunjin, Han Jisung, Lee Felix (Yongbok), Kim Seungmin, and Yang Jeongin (I.N). In 2017, there was a survival show that took place under the same name, Stray Kids, produced by their company, JYP Entertainment, in which they debuted through.

January 17th, 2017 is the date of Stray Kids’ sub group, 3RACHA, formation, which consists of Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han. This subunit is the main rap line in the group and they are also the main producers, writers, and composers of their content and music.

On January 8th, 2018 Stray Kids released their pre-debut album, ‘Mixtape’, with the title track ‘Hellevator’. This song was immediately a hit with the current fan base and showed how much potential and talent the group truly have. Now, with that being said does that mean they were always popular and debuted with ease?

No, the eldest member and leader, Bang Chan, picked out all the members himself and was  the first person to be able to do so in the K-Pop industry, so they were called a joke. Two members, Felix and Lee Know, were originally eliminated off of the show, but were later added back for another chance and, upon proving themselves, the group ended up debuting on March 25th, 2018 with the album ‘I am NOT’ and the title track ‘District 9’, as a nine member group with the former member, Kim Woojin, leaving the group on October 28th, 2019 for reasons announced as ‘personal reasons’.

Although they barely had any promotions and were labeled as the company’s flop group, they ended up proving themselves well when they received their first win for their music video ‘Miroh’  on April 4th, 2019. This group later went on to do their first world tour, named District 9: Unlock Tour, but towards the end of 2019-2020 it was cut short due to COVID-19, but that didn’t slow them down or break them apart.

Bang Chan, their leader, has said before, “I think that one of our biggest weapons is the brotherhood we have.” This is only one of the many times they have proved to their fans just how close they truly are to each other. They aren’t only close and loving towards each other, but also to their fans. They always speak encouraging words whenever they can whether it’s at a concert, in their songs, or in their other content.

In 2022-2023 they went on their first full year world tour, named Maniac World Tour, and at the first concert all of the members broke down into tears as they saw how much their fan base grew. Fans sang their songs and showed their support by putting on a video full of Stray Kids memories and encouraging words to the group on the concert stage screens. This led to Bang Chan saying, “I’m gonna protect all of you, each one of you. I will protect you all. “

The next day they did another concert and he said, “Hello everyone, welcome to the Stray Kids concert. What you have just seen is something very precious. It is something you won’t see everyday..you know it’s funny cause the eight of us we actually don’t cry that often, but when we’re in front of you guys we can’t hold our emotions and it hits us really hard. And we want to thank you for just existing and for living with us in the same time line…But because of you guys we can really exist as well. It’s all thanks to you. And I, on behalf of the group, and the group itself, we will always protect each other and protect STAYs. So thank you for being with us today. I’m gonna protect all of you, each one of you. I will protect you all. All the staff, fans, and members. No one set a finger on them. Don’t you ever dare to touch them.”

Those words are one of the most loved speeches by their fandom, STAY, because it shows how genuine of a group they really are. The second eldest member, Lee Know, once mentioned how they would never stop making music and they will continue doing so even when they are in wheelchairs. The whole group shares a goal to be the longest lasting K-Pop group so they don’t let down their fans nor each other.

In short, Stray Kids are the most genuine group whether with fans, each other, or their music. Is there another music group this genuine or enjoyable? If so, leave a comment and they might be my next topic.
