2020 and 2021 were great years for Star Wars

2020 and 2021 were great years for Star Wars

2020 is said to be one of the worst years ever. Several incidents made people think 2020 was the worst year ever, and the worst one, a pandemic hit, and people were quarantined. However, with all that time to spend at home in that quarantine, came a lot of content for Star Wars fans. The years 2020 and 2021 have seen several releases for the Star Wars universe. There were many releases of novels, comics, movies, TV shows, and even some documentaries. Aside from content people could watch, the video game, Knights of the Old Republic, was recently released on Nintendo switch. In these past 2 years, a lot of Star Wars content has been released, but there is still a lot of scheduled content to come in what is left of this year, as well as 2022 and 2023.

Book Releases

Let’s start with the books that were published over these past 2 years. In 2020, There were a couple of novels were released. The first book to be released was Queen’s Peril, a young-adult novel. Queen’s Peril was released on June 2, 2020, and is a prequel to Queen’s Shadow, released in 2019. Queen’s Peril was written by E.K. Johnston and has a page count of 288. The events of this book take place when Padme at the age of 14 is elected to be the queen of her planet, Naboo. The story is mainly centered around her and her handmaidens.

The second book to be released in 2020 was Star Wars: Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising. Chaos Rising was released on September 1 of last year and is the first book of the Thrawn Ascendancy series. Chaos Rising was written by Timothy Zahn and has 336 pages. The book takes place during the Clone Wars and is about Thrawn’s mission as a commander in the Chiss Ascendancy to track down dangerous assailants.

This year, there were a few more canon Star Wars novels released. In 2021, Star Wars: Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good was released. Greater Good was published on April 27, 2021, and is the second book in the Thrawn Ascendancy trilogy. The author of Greater Good is Timothy Zahn, and the book contains 432 pages. Greater Good takes place after Chaos Rising and is about Thrawn and the rest of the Chiss Ascendancy dealing with the aftermath of the events that took place in Chaos Rising.

Star Wars Visions: Ronin was the second novel that was released in 2021. Ronin was released on October 12, 2021, shortly after the show it was based on Star Wars: Visions was released on September 22, 2021. First-time author Emma Mieko Candon wrote Ronin, with the book containing 352 total pages. The book takes place between the third and fourth Star Wars movies, specifically after the first Star Wars: Visions episode, The Duel. The story of Ronin is centered around the aftermath of The Duel, while the main characters struggle to find their place in the universe.

The third Star Wars novel of the year was published as Star Wars: Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil. Lesser Evil was just recently published on November 16, 2021. As with the rest of the Ascendancy trilogy, Lesser Evil was written by Timothy Zahn and has a total of 576 pages. Lesser Evil is the third and final book in the Thrawn Ascendancy series and is about Thrawn trying to prevent the 9 leading families of the Chiss Ascendancy from turning on each other and risking everything to do so.

Series Releases

There were also quite a few shows released over the last couple of years. The first Star Wars show that came out in 2020 was Star Wars: Resistance, an animated children’s show. Season 2 episodes 14-19 aired at the beginning of 2020 throughout January 5-26. Resistance has a rating of 5/10 on IMDb. This shows that Resistance is less popular among Star Wars fans as the show is mainly aimed at young children and doesn’t add much to the Star Wars universe.

The second show to air in 2020 was Star Wars: The Clone Wars, an animated PG show. The Clone Wars show originally started in 2008, however, in 2020, the show’s final season aired. The 7th season started airing on February 21, 2020, and the final episode of the season and show aired on May 4, 2020. Season 7 of The Clone Wars has a total of 12 episodes, making it the shortest season in the series. The Clone Wars is very popular among Star Wars fans having an 8.3/10 rating on IMDb. The Clone Wars takes place in between the second and third Star Wars movies during the clone war, and some of season 7 overlaps with the events of the third Star Wars movie, Revenge of the Sith.

The third and possibly most popular Star Wars show to air in 2020 was Star Wars: The Mandalorian, a live-action TV-14 series. The first season first aired in 2019, and the second season dropped on Disney+ in 2020. The first episode aired on October 30, 2020, and the season finale aired on December 18 of the same year. The Mandalorian is more popular than most Star Wars shows and is known more widely as it is live-action and therefore seen as more mature. The Mandalorian has an 8.8/10 rating on IMDb, just a little higher than The Clone Wars. The show takes place after the sixth Star Wars movie and after the fall of the empire.

In 2021, we saw fewer shows for Star Wars. The first Star Wars series that streamed in 2021 was Star Wars: The Bad Batch, an animated show for ages 8 and up. The first episode of The Bad Batch titled Aftermath aired on Disney+ on May 4, 2021, a day on which several Star Wars content has been released, seeing as May 4 is known as Star Wars day. The show went until August 14, 2021, when the season finale was released. The Bad Batch has an 8/10 rating on IMDb and is popular among the Star Wars fandom. The Bad Batch Takes place after Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and during order 66, an order that was issued to the entire clone army to execute all the Jedi.

The other Star Wars series that was released this year was Star Wars: Visions, the very first Star Wars anime. All of the Visions was released at once on September 22 earlier this year. Visions are slightly less popular than other Star Wars shows. This is likely because it is a collection of non-canon, stand-alone shorts. Vision’s rating on IMDb is 7.1/10, and the show has many different shorts that take place during different times in Star Wars history.

To Be Released

Although 2020 and 2021 were some of the worst years for the world in a very long time, the 2 years were some of the best years Star Wars has had in a while. There were several books, movies, and series released amid everything that gave people entertainment while they were at home. Even though these past couple of years have been great, the next to come will see some more amazing content. The Book of Boba Fett is set to release on December 29, 2021, on Disney+. The final book of the Queen trilogy that was previously mentioned, titled Queen’s Hope is releasing sometime next year. There are also several shows and following seasons of other shows that will be released in 2022 and 2023. These include The Mandalorian season 3, Andor, Acolyte, Rogue Squadron, Bad Batch season 2, Ahsoka, and the long-awaited Kenobi show. There is also some less well-known content that will come out, such as, the animated movie A Droid Story and the book Padawan that will drop on July 26, 2022. 2020 and 2021 were chaotic years, but at least while we were at home trying to stay safe, Star Wars provided escape and distraction through their amazing content.

How Star Wars: Visions Changes the Star Wars Universe

How Star Wars: Visions Changes the Star Wars Universe

On September 22nd of this year, the latest Star Wars content was released, a single-season series of 9 different 13-22 minute stand-alone non-canon anime shorts called Star Wars: Visions that aired on Disney+. Even though the show isn’t in the official Star Wars canon, Visions still immensely impacts the Star Wars saga. From when Star Wars: A New Hope was first released in the spring of 1977 to the present day, the Star Wars franchise has greatly expanded, but some things have stayed the same. For example, since the very beginning, Star Wars has been greatly inspired by Japanese storytelling and culture. With the help of 7 popular and successful Japanese animation studios, the 2 worlds of anime and Star Wars finally elope in Star Wars: Visions. While none of the shorts from the show are in the canon Star Wars universe, Star Wars: Visions really changes Star Wars. Not only did it give fans a show to watch without really having to worry about too much of a plot, but it also provided a new novel on the main character of one of the episodes. Not only that, but the show might become bigger in popularity, content and importance to both the Star Wars franchise and its fans.
In the very first episode of Star Wars: Visions titled “The Duel”, the main characters, a stubborn former sith known as the Ronin and his sassy but caring droid companion, B5-56 face a sith lord and her bandits to protect a small village from being robbed of their resources. The Ronin is a lightsaber-wielding force user who used to be a sith and nothing is really mentioned about his past in “The Duel”. He has a red blade as lord of the sith do, has a collection of kyber crystals all of which are coloured red, and says that he isn’t a Jedi, but seems to be a hero with a Jedi like a moral compass. However, a book titled: Star Wars: Ronin – A Visions Novel by first-time author Emma Mieko Candon will be released on the 12th of October this year. The book gives more depth to the main characters, Ronin and B5-56 as well as their story. Not only the main characters but also the main villain. The first part of the first chapter shows what happened just before “The Duel” and what led up to the events in the episode. The rest of chapter 1 and chapter 2 is just what happened in the first episode of Star Wars: Visions. Even though those first two chapters are basically the same as the episode, the book still does a great job of going into the characters’ personalities and perspectives. There is also a voice in Ronin’s head as well as the villain’s head, however, the voice is nowhere to be found in Visions. The book has a lot of twists and turns and it is difficult to stop reading at times. There is no doubt that the book will do really well once it comes out.
Even though none of the shorts from Visions are canon, a lot of the episodes have characters and plot points that are a part of the known universe and could make it possible for the show to sneak its way into the canon Star Wars universe. Although currently there are no plans to make the show a part of the canon, the producer of the show Kanako Shirasaki and Executive producer James Waugh said that there are many ideas that could inspire the next generation of Star Wars writers and producers that lie in Visions. An example of how the show could inspire future creators is the novel about the Ronin from episode 1 of Visions that was previously mentioned. So, even though the show is not a part of the canon saga, some threads of Visions could be woven into the fabric of the Star Wars canon universe. If the show isn’t ever made canon, there is always the possibility of a second season. Waugh said in an interview with Sean Keane from c net that based on how fans react to Visions, which so far is really positive for the most part, another season just might be possible. He also said that he and Kanako really enjoyed the show and would love to continue the show with more content.
Star Wars: Visions is a really important addition to the Star Wars universe. Even if the show isn’t a part of the official canon, it is still a very important element of Star Wars. This is mainly because finally, Star Wars has beautifully clashed with a form of Japanese storytelling where a lot of inspiration was originally drawn for many different directors and writers of the franchise. Seeing the saga connect with its roots in a really creative and different way is really important because it helps people see where it all started and why the Star Wars universe is the way it is today. Visions also have provided some of the best non-canon content yet. The show also gave the universe a lot of room to expand further and maybe even bring in an alternate universe at some point. An entire novel is coming out that has ties to the show. It is just a bunch of shorts that have no relation to each other, so that leaves a lot of room for possible expansion on the series. Overall, Visions, even though the show is not a part of the Star Wars canon, has greatly and positively impacted the Star Wars saga which shows just how important one small thing can change something for the better.

STAR WARS: The Bad Batch

STAR WARS: The Bad Batch

There is a new show among the countless others in the seemingly endless world-renowned Star Wars galaxy. Forty-four years ago, May twenty-fifth, 1977. There was general excitement, as there was a new movie coming out. Of course, nobody, not even George Lucas, could have guessed just how popular Star Wars would become.

The History of Star Wars

That first movie, simply called “Star Wars”, was followed by two more to complete the trilogy: “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” and “Star Wars: The Return Of The Jedi”. But the ball didn’t stop rolling there. No, it kept on going, growing larger and gaining momentum. On May nineteenth, 1999, the whole story changed when the original Star Wars movie became the fourth, named “A New Hope”, the second became the fifth, and the third became the sixth. Because, on that date, a new “first” movie was released, telling the beginning of the story of Darth Vader. Eventually, there was the “beginning” trilogy and the original (and now second) trilogy.

And then it continued, with the start of a third trilogy. “The Force Awakens”, released December eighteenth, 2015, continued the Star Wars universe by creating a new diabolical galactic bad guy: The First Order. When the much-awaited ninth movie, “The Rise Of Skywalker” was released, there was much elation, but disappointment also. With the ninth movie out, the main story of Star Wars would come to a close.

But already there was more in the making. A side movie called “Solo” was released, but all the others of the like were canceled. Way back in 1985 there was an animated series called “Droids and Ewoks”. There was also the well-known “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” which started in 2003 and ended in 2018. “Rebels” first premiered a year before “The Force Awakens”. “Resistance” came out in 2018. “The Mandalorian”, an instant hit, appeared in 2019 and is still going. And there’s more. “The Book Of Boba Fett”, “Andor”, “Obi-Wan Kenobi”, “The Acolyte”, “Ahsoka”, “Lando”, and “Rangers Of The Republic” are all planned. And there’s another show, animated, that came out this year by the title of “The Bad Batch”.

What Is The Bad Batch?

The Bad Batch focuses on a single squad of clone troopers known as the “Bad Batch”. The show picks up during the beginning of the Empire. The squad, officially known as Squad 99, consists of five troopers. Each one of them is stronger in one field than the others due to certain genetic alterations being superior to in the other fields. For example, one is named ‘Crosshair’, and he is an excellent sharpshooter. Another is named ‘Wrecker’, and he is large and very strong. The leader of the squad is named Hunter. The squad’s control chips (used for Order 66) are unoperational due to their genetics. The first season focuses on three main points: learning about Omega (who is a young altered clone girl) hiding from the Empire as it rises, and getting Crosshair back. In the first episode, Crosshair’s control chip begins working, and he starts obeying the Empire. But the Bad Batch has a deep connection with each member of their squad, so they try to reason with Crosshair. Unfortunately, they fail.

The series connects to many key parts of the Star Wars Galaxy. Many people think that The Bad Batch may go in a different direction than the traditional way of sticking to what is already known about the galaxy. They hope this will be the case because they want something completely new. Although each Star Wars show and movie is different, they all help fill in blanks in the galaxy. And although this is helpful, the public wants something new. The Mandalorian had been doing this, but then the second season introduced characters we already know: Ahsoka Tano, Boba Fett, and Luke Skywalker.

So will The Bad Batch follow the ways of its predecessors? The show has already included Wilhuff Tarkin, but he has played only a small part as of now. All in all, The Bad Batch is a recent addition to the fantastic, never-ending, mind-boggling Star Wars franchise that will hopefully tell a brand-new story full of new characters and planets.

Why The Owl House Was Canceled

Why The Owl House Was Canceled

On the 4th of October earlier this year, the writer, executive producer, and creator of The Owl House, Dana Terrace announced on Reddit why the third season of The Owl House was shortened and the show canceled.

The third season of The Owl House, or TOH, will consist of three specials as opposed to seasons one and two. Season one has nineteen episodes, and two has ten with the other half of the season releasing later. The specials will be about forty-four minutes long rather than the usual twenty-two minutes. Season three of The Owl House is expected to air on Disney Channel sometime in 2022 and was confirmed to be the show’s final season. Terrace confirmed earlier this year that this was going to happen, but never explained why until recently. She explained that The Owl House “Didn’t fit into Disney’s brand”. Many fans are still upset even though Terrace explained everything.

Some people believe that if The Owl House aired on a different streaming service, the show could have thrived even more than it already has. The statement also left some people to wonder, what fits into the Disney brand if The Owl House doesn’t.

Of course, fans were theorizing why the show was canceled. One theory was that the show got canceled because it got negative backlash from the main character, Luz Noceda voiced by Sarah-Nicole Roberts, being bisexual and many other side characters being LGBTQIA+. Contrary to popular belief, The Owl House was not canceled because of the low budget due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The show also definitely wasn’t canceled due to bad ratings,

The Owl House has a large fanbase, has a rating of 8.2/10 on IMDb, and was in the top five of most successful animated series on Disney channel. Instead, Terrace announced that the show was canceled for the following “SO WHAT WAS IT?! At the end of the day, there are a few business people who oversee what fits into the Disney brand and one day one of those guys decided TOH didn’t fit that ‘brand’. The story is serialized (BARELY compared to any average anime lmao), our audience skews older, and that just didn’t fit this one guy’s tastes. That’s it! Ain’t that wild? Really grinds my guts, boils my brain, kicks my shins, all the things. It sucks but it is what it is.

Although Terrace’s news brought some closure to fans, many people thought it was odd that the show was canceled because of an older audience. The show is still family-friendly and aimed towards younger viewers. Several fans also argue that Disney shows and other animation shows and movies are not just for children, animation is something people of all ages can enjoy. However, there is one possible role in the show’s cancellation and why other Disney shows with older viewers weren’t canceled. That is on what streaming service which The Owl House aired.

The Owl House aired on Disney channel. The streaming network has a target audience of children of ages six to eleven. If The Owl House aired on Disney+ however, the show could have been saved. Disney+ has shows that have a higher audience rating and have content for all ages. There is a big difference between The Owl House and other Disney shows that are viewed by more mature audiences, and that is that most of these shows are spin-offs of an already incredibly successful saga. Some of these shows include Star Wars: The Bad Batch and What If…? from Marvel. The Owl House, on the other hand, is a new, original animated series. Stand-alone series are significantly easier to cancel because they are not a part of a larger, more popular franchise. Had The Owl House been released Disney+, the show just might have survived. We can see that other original shows, short films, and movies that are or will air on Disney+ are not being canceled. For example, Iwájú, an African science fiction television series coming out next year on Disney+. It is, however, unfortunate that The Owl House just might have been saved had the show been pitched just a little later.

As previously stated, fans of The Owl House were a little skeptical about why the show was canceled. The show was canceled because The Owl House has an older, more mature audience. However, many other Disney shows have more mature audiences have been running for years that will not be canceled anytime soon. Some shows like that include Disney+ shows like The Walking Dead and American Horror Stories. Although an argument can be made that those shows were on Disney+ and not Disney channel as stated before. There are also other shows on Disney channel that are alive and thriving. For example, Amphibia is also a popular show on Disney channel. Amphibia currently has three seasons and 45 episodes and has about as mature an audience as The Owl House. The season finale of season 2 has a warning at the beginning of the episode that some scenes might be too intense for younger viewers. This warning is there for many reasons. There are scenes with fighting sequences, near-death of characters, and most of all, at the very end of the episode, a 13-year-old girl was stabbed on screen. No blood is shown, but the scene is still quite intense. Amphibia, of course, is currently still airing and is streaming season 3. While The Owl House has never had anything that graphic or violent happen or mentioned anywhere in the show. Still, Amphibia, and many other shows like it, fits Disney’s brand, and The Owl House doesn’t. As Terrace said, “It sucks but it is what it is.

Ultimately, The Owl Houses fanbase is upset that the show will end prematurely. Several trends and hashtags have started on Twitter, Reddit, and other social media platforms to get the show more content. Unfortunately, for now, the show is canceled. However, Terrace said in her Reddit post that there is still a lot of content to look forward to and that The Owl House could have a future with different people in charge. The reason the show was canceled is a little short-sighted, as Disney’s brand is constantly growing along with Disney as a company. Terrace also said in the Reddit post that she wasn’t able to argue or speak on the matter and that she was just told about the decision, so we know she can’t do much about it, which is unfortunate. Many people still question Disney’s motives and reasoning and that The Owl House and shows like it are getting canceled for invalid reasons and the only compensation for the end of the show is Hot Topic merchandise. The Owl House will be missed by many, and the show was great while it was there, but maybe the show could go on. Terrace said in several social media posts that the trends and hashtags do not go unnoticed by Disney’s executives. The Owl House, in the future, could be saved.
