How The Simpsons Predicted the Future

How The Simpsons Predicted the Future

Everybody knows the beloved TV show ‘The Simpsons’. In almost 30 years of running there are many predictions for the future. Firstly, ‘TOYS R US’ closed. They predicted this 14 years before the closing happened. Secondly, The Siegfried and Roy Tiger Attack. Lastly, the “Tomacco Plant” which is a plant that is a cross between a tomato and a tobacco plant. Of course there are many other predictions that The Simpsons have made but these are some of the more important predictions.

TOYS ‘R’ US CLOSING!

Toys R Us closing

TOYS ‘R’ US closed in 2018 but the ‘Simpsons’ predicted this occurrence in 2004. In the article “’THE SIMPSONS’ SEEMINGLY PREDICTED TOYS ‘R’ US SHUTDOWN 14 YEARS AGO” by Newsweek, explains that an episode in season 15 shows that people were getting rid of every child friendly thing in the town. The text states that “Playpens were crushed, “Kids at Play” signs were set on fire and Moe the bartender was seen flipping forward Toys ‘R’ Us’ famous backward R”. This is important because, it shows that the store went bankrupt from no one going there in the episode which is almost exactly what happened to the real store. But unlike the show the store did not get closed by people getting rid of every child related item.

Siegfried and Roy Tiger Attack

Siegfried and Roy

Siegfried and Roy were a German-American magician duo who had a white tiger named Manticore which mauled one of the magicians. The Simpsons predicted this 10 years before it happened. In the article “5 Real-Life Events Predicted by Simpsons Jokes” by Mental Floss they talk about how Roy from Siegfried and Roy got mauled in 2003 and unlike in the episode Roy survives. This is important because it shows that the show knew so much even before the occurrence the people who worked on the show respond to this by saying that ‘it was bound to happen sooner or later’. So this was no surprise to the creators but it was a surprise to the fans and even the duo themselves.

The “Tomacco” Plant

Tomacoo Plant

The Tomacco Plant is a plant that is a cross between a tomato plant and a tobacco plant. According to the article “’18 times ‘The Simpsons’ accurately predicted the future” by Business Insider claims that in the episode “E-I-E-I-D’oh!” it shows that Homer Simpson is using nuclear power to produce this plant. The article states “Rob Baur to create his own plant. In 2003, Baur grafted together a tobacco root and a tomato stem to make “tomacco”. This is important because it shows that some Simpson fan out there got to make the plant. Plus they even got to give it to the makers of the show because they were so excited and impressed by the dedication of the fan to invent this.

All in all, ‘The Simpsons’ have predicted many events in the past and who’s to say they haven’t predicted future events we don’t know about yet. Although there are already a lot of major events we know about that the creators have predicted for kicks and giggles or to create drama. Such as, ‘Toys R Us’ closing in the episode “Marge vs Singles, Seniors, Childless Couples and Teens” which premiered in January of 2004 explains how they have to take the store away to prevent child friendly things. Also, they predicted the Siegfried and Roy Tiger Attack in the episode titled “$pringfield” in which they show how they add a Casino to Springfield and Siegfried and Roy perform. Lastly, the Tomacco plant which is a cross between a tomato and tobacco plants. This is shown in the episode “E-I-E-I-D’oh!” Where Homer creates the plant. The Simpsons is a beloved show through the years and it is crazy to think that they predicted all of this and I’m sure that there is more predictions to come.
