The Flying Dutchman

The Flying Dutchman is a haunted ship that has been around since the 17th century. The ship is famous for floating in the seas with a ghostly glow surrounding it. There are many myths about it, like the ship being doomed to sail the seas for all eternity. Secondly, the ship has had many “appearances” on television, whether the ship is animated or drawn. Lastly, the mysterious sightings of the Flying Dutchman through the years.

The myths about the ship are quite bizarre, but make sense when everything in context is put together. One of the main myths about the ship is that the ship, crew, and captain are forced to sail the seas until doomsday. Another one is that the crew of the Flying Dutchman ordered the captain to turn around but he wouldn’t because he was “drunk” or just plain out mad. There are many, many more myths about the ship. These are the topmost chilling ones.

There are many “cameos” in television shows of the Flying Dutchman including:

Scooby Doo

It featured a Flying Dutchman ghost modeled after what the illustrator’s deception of the character was.

SpongeBob

Was the name of both the pirate the captain of the boat and the haunted ship and the voice of the pirate was  “Brian Doyle-Murray”.

The Simpsons

There is a man called the “Sea Captain” who owns a restaurant named ‘The Frying Dutchman’.

Although there are many more cameos these are some of the most known.

The Flying Dutchman has had many reported sightings through the years and some alleged sightings. One of the well known sightings was by Prince George of Wales. He was with his brother and their tutor. They temporarily shipped into HMS Inconstant after damaging their rudder. He wrote about it in his journal stating “July 11th. At 4 a.m. the Flying Dutchman crossed our bows. A strange red light as of a phantom ship all aglow”. This is one of the more famous sightings although there might be more just unrecorded.

In conclusion, The Flying Dutchman is a haunted ship particularly famous around the 19th century. There are many myths about the ship and it being haunted. Plus it was featured in many television shows. And it has had many sightings of the ship. This ship truly is one of the most haunted ships in the world.
