Murder Hornets

Are you scared for your children playing outside? Are you terrified that they could get hurt in any way? Well, one thing to make sure your kids watch out for is murder hornets. Today, we will be talking about a few of those dangerous hornets. First, we have Asian giant hornet, the European hornet,

Asian Giant Hornets

Asian giant hornets are “the world’s largest hornets”, as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_giant_hornet says. These things are also known as the Japanese giant hornet. There were some sightings of these bugs in the Pacific Northwest in 2019, around North America. There were also a few sightings of Asian giant hornets in 2020. The same article, it states, “They prefer to live in low mountains and forests, while almost completely avoiding planes and high-altitude climates.” So these hornets like to keep safe away from people and other things. Up in the mountains, they are safer from humans than down where the towns are. “The hornet has a body length of 45 millimetres…” and “a wingspan around 75 mm” It again says in the link. As you can see, this hornet (the largest one) is really big compared to regular bees. Bigger body length, a bigger wingspan even.

European Hornet

European hornets are the largest in Europe. So not like the Asian giant hornet, it’s only the largest in one place. This bug was found in North America as well, they were introduced by some Europeans sometime in the 1800s. An interesting fact from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_hornet “…is known for making intricate paper-like nests out of surrounding plant materials and other fibers.” So the European hornets make a different nest, in that they say a paper type thing. They use natural materials that help out their nest. To make it stronger and better. This way to make their nests, are in fact different from other vespine, says the article.

Eastern Cicada-killer Wasps

The Sphecius speciosus, most appropriately called cicada killer wasps is a large wasp species that dig. Is appropriate to use that name because there are many other related species, so it’s better to use the name cicada killer wasp. In North America, they are referred to as sand hornets. These types of species are found in the Eastern and Midwest of the U.S.A. Also, some in the south direction in Mexico. In the article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphecius_speciosus it says, “Adult eastern cicada-killer wasps are large, 1.5 to 5.0 centimetres.” A not too small, pretty big wasp.
