Protect Your Pets

Protect Your Pets

In extreme temperatures, your pets can be seriously harmed if left outside unattended, and you can face criminal charges if you do so. If it’s below freezing, your pet can get frostbite, hypothermia, and even die. In temperatures above ninety degrees, your pet can get sunburnt, dehydrated, and heat stroke which can lead to death.

Yes, many pets enjoy going outside for some fresh air, but if left outside for extended periods of time without necessities, great harm can be done. Leaving your dog or cat outside in extreme temperatures can lead to a first-level misdemeanor, and depending on the level of crime, can get you a one thousand dollar fine and two years in prison.

If for some reason you cannot take your pet inside, such as if they are destructive or aren’t able to be potty trained, contact your veterinarian and they can recommend you to a behavioral specialist, which can resolve those problems. Additionally, the recommended parameters for leaving your pet outside are that they have shelter, water, food, and some way to heat up or cool down, depending on the environment. Also, you should make sure that your pet is not neglected, and can have socialization.

If your pet has a health condition, always monitor them while outside, due to the fact they are more at risk with extreme temperatures. Brachycephalic dogs are also more at risk because they have a harder time panting to cool down, and get cold quite easily. Short hair, hairless, and smaller pets are also more at risk because they cannot stay warm as easily as larger pets, or pets with double coats. Additionally, pets with double coats are okay in slightly colder temperatures because they can stay warmer, but struggle more with high temperatures because in the heat they can’t as easily cool down.

Furthermore, in areas with climates that have all four seasons, you have to be careful of both ends of the temperature spectrum, because of the fact that there are often winters with temperatures below freezing, and often summers with temperatures above ninety degrees.

At this point, 23 states and the District of Columbia restrict the time that you can tether your dog. Sometimes this period is as little as thirty minutes. Some states say that you cannot leave your pet outside in freezing temperatures, during storm warnings, and during extreme temperature warnings. Make sure to check what the laws in your state are.

It should be noted that pets are just as vulnerable to extreme weather and temperature as we humans are, if not more so due to their smaller size and not being able to care for themselves. Pets rely on their owners for safety and protection, as well as on sustainable food, clean water, and suitable shelter. Many pets are left outside in extreme temperatures, and many of them die or get seriously hurt. Some pets that are left outside in temperatures below freezing and it snows or rains, can get frozen to the ground, get bloody paws, and even more damage.

As of right now, many animal associations can not take action against owners for leaving their pets outside, due to the fact that they have no legal powers. Because of this many pets are left outside in extreme temperatures and many of them die.

Don’t stand by and do nothing! Spread awareness. Tell your family, friends, and neighbors about the dangers of leaving your pets outside. Most importantly, if you see a pet left outside in extreme temperatures, take note of the type of animal, the time, the date, and the exact location. Taking a picture can help as well. Then you should contact your local law enforcement.

Dog Or Bear?

Dog Or Bear?

Dog Or Bear?
When you get a dog, it should be a happy moment, and it was until they started noticing that something was wrong with it.
Su Yun was just like any other mom. She loved her kids, was hard-working, and her life was action-packed. She thought her hands were already full while raising her kids, family time, and spending time with her husband. Su Yun and her family were living in China, specifically in the southwest province of Kunming City. Her and her family’s lives were relatively normal until they were going to add another member to the family – a pet. They all thought that this would be fun, but little did they know that this decision would put their whole family on the spotlight.
With families with young children, life can get pretty hectic. So Su Yun started planning a vacation. She started packing bags, helping the kids, and buying the snack, but no matter how much planning, something was bound to happen. After months had passed, they were finally on vacation and excited for what was to come. Suddenly they came across a litter of puppies that were up for adoption. The kids started begging their mom, and as you can guess, Su said yes. The kids had been begging for a dog for years, and Su finally caved in. Soon enough she was going to find out that she had a lot more on her hands.
The man who had sold the puppy to her had told her that the dog might grow very large. But that didn’t stop her and her kids. The seller told her that this dog was a Tibetan Mastiff. And that this dog could weigh up to 180 pounds and stand up to two feet tall. That’s one big puppy. Su and her family decided to name their dog “ Little Black,” referring to his pitch-black fur, and partially irony because they knew that he was going to get so big. This name might have sounded weird in English, but in Chinese, it was super cute. But they didn’t know that in the future, this could get them into legal trouble.
The family continued to fall in love with Little Black, but once they got home, they needed to think of a way to raise it. But as time passed, they started to see some strange behaviors. One day when Su got home, she found Little Black in the kitchen, standing like a human! Sure it was normal for a dog to stand like this for a couple of seconds, but he had been standing there for probably about 5-10 minutes. He started having a tremendous appetite, which consisted of a full box of mixed fruits and about two packs of noodles. Probably any dog who ate that would have been sick and go see the vet, but not Little Black. This kept happening, and Little Black started having a bad temper, so Su Yun started to research and the results were terrifying.
After researching this behavior, the result was scary. She found out that she had been caring for a Black Bear! She had no idea what to do, she had been caring for a Black Bear for two years. Su found out that raising a black bear in china meant that they could go to jail, so she knew what to do. Without being able to transfer the bear to another home, she had to call the authorities. No one knew what would happen, but luckily she was able to avoid jail because she didn’t know it was a bear. But everything turned out okay. Su was able to avoid jail and Little Black was able to stay at a reserve. But no one had to worry anymore. Little Black’s backyard days were over.

What should You do About your Pet and COVID-19?

What should You do About your Pet and COVID-19?

What happened to the first pet to get Coronavirus?

Some people have never thought of this, but what if our pets get Coronavirus? Well, the very first dog to test positive for the virus in China has died recently. It was a 17-year-old Pomeranian. The dog belonged to a 60-year-old woman and died three days after returning home from quarantine. However, another dog living in the same home consistently tested negative during the quarantine.

Therefore, pets such as cats and dogs can get COVID-19. However, there should not be a reason to panic. The Pomeranian was an older dog and had traveled recently. Not to mention the test was a weak positive.

Can your pet give you COVID-19?

“No. I think the idea that we’re going to give this virus to our pets or we’re going to get it from them is just nonsense,” said Dr. John Williams, chief of the division of pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Another thing said was by Schaffner. They said “We don’t have to worry about pets — this virus now likes humans but data show it’s not spreading among pets or farm animals,”

Both these quotes prove that our pets cannot spread the disease to us, and we cannot spread the disease to them. The only reason why people started worrying about this in the first place was that the very first known dog in Hong Kong got diagnosed with it.

After the dog tested positive, they tested several other dogs and cats for the virus and found that there were no positive results in any of the pets. So, therefore, the likelihood of dogs and cats contracting this is extremely low, as of right now.

What should Pet Parents Do About All This?

Embrace your pets. They can’t give you the virus, so “hug away” experts say. After all, pets play a vital psychological role for their owners, especially now because everyone is feeling so isolated and alone inside their homes.

This is definitely the best time to hold your pet close to you. Since you can’t go and hang out with any of your human friends, you can at least have fun with your animal friend

At least now you can be entertained at home with your pet. Especially if you’ve been busy recently. Your pet will love and appreciate you putting in the time and effort to bond with them more. Let’s keep our distance from our human loved ones just so we can be safe. But, if you need something to hug, go ahead and love on your dog, cat, bird, etc.

With everyone stuck at home, we may as well sit back and relax with our pet. Your pet will enjoy it as well, so why not? Plus, pets can reduce stress and anxiety. So just taking a break to play fetch with your dog, or sitting down to read with your cat asleep on your lap, or even watching your pet fish swim around. It can be very relaxing for you to watch.

Even if you are still going crazy with being indoors all day, as long as you keep your distance, you can take your dog on a walk around the neighborhood. Or take your dog out in the backyard to play with a ball.

In conclusion, we shouldn’t be worried about our pets spreading the disease to us. Instead, we should hold them close to us and spend as much time as we can with them since we can’t be near our other loved ones.
