Taking a Look Back at Superbowl III

Taking a Look Back at Superbowl III

Taking a Look Back

It has been 52 years since the Jets won Super Bowl III back in 1969. Unfortunately, it has also been 52 years since they have even participated in the Super Bowl as well. The New York Jets have had a rough NFL career. They aren’t considered a good team, and it’s been a very long time since they have made a memorable occurrence throughout NFL history. Instead of focusing on the losses, and what could have been, let’s take a look at the most memorable thing that ever happened to the New York Jets.

In 1969, Super Bowl III took place in the Orange Bowl stadium. This stadium was located in Miami Florida. The Orange Bowl stadium was built in 1937. Unfortunately, the Orange Bowl stadium was demolished in 2008 where many memorable events took place, such as Super Bowl III.

The Baltimore Colts

Back in 1953, a man named Carol Rosenbloom got the rights to make an NFL team for the city of Baltimore. During their first few seasons as a team, they didn’t play too well. In 1958, the Baltimore Colts won their first NFL championship. The next year, they followed up with another NFL championship win. They ended up winning just one more NFL championship 9 years later. This led the Baltimore Colts to face the New York Jets in the third-ever Super Bowl in NFL history.

The Game Begins

Let the kickoff begin. It was 3:05 PM (ET), and Super Bowl III had officially begun. Keep in mind that the Colts during this time were much better than the Jets. So obviously the majority of the people in the crowd believed that the colts would sweep the Jets. “The game, played on January 12, 1969, at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, is regarded as one of the greatest upsets in American sports history.” According to SportsTeamHistory.

In the first quarter, no team scored. In the second quarter, the Jets needed to score then if they even wanted a chance to win. Luckily for them, they got it. The first touchdown of the game! Following the second quarter, the Jets scored once again at the beginning of the third quarter but missed the field goal. The Colts at this point were very stressed about losing to a team like the Jets. Once the fourth quarter rolled around, the Colts scored a touchdown. The Jets needed to finish this. Then, they kicked a final field goal to end it.

The Jets played extremely well this Superbowl, leading them to be able to defeat the Baltimore Colts. The Jets at this time were AFL Champions, but the Colts were NFL Champions. The final score of this game was 16-7. This was the very first time an AFL team won the Superbowl. This game made the football history books.
