Dune: Part Three won’t be the adaptation it claims to be
Denis Villeneuve has made a pretty faithful and accurate adaptation to Dune. I as a lover of the books really do appreciate Dune parts one and two but I am weary of Part Three.
What is Dune Part 3 based off of?
Dune Part: Three will be based off of the sequel to Dune, Dune Messiah. Dune Messiah in my opinion is the weakest of the series. This already adds a layer of disappointment. In addition to that Dune Messiah is a very hard book to follow mostly because it is driven by politics not action until the end. There is the possibility that Villeneuve will have to rework the story a little to include more action which I am not the most opposed to but you still have the fact that the story is nearly built off of the anticipation of action.

The Mistakes made in movies One and Two
I in general really appreciated the two prior Dune movies but I do believe that there were mistakes made that will impact the writing set up of Part 3. First, Prescience wasn’t properly explained. In Dune Messiah one of the main themes is that Paul gets “crushed” by the weight of his visions; in Dune (the book version) it sets up how Paul’s visions work and how they show him many futures but he must wade between them and in the end he gives up after losing everything that mattered to him. In the movies Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two it features his visions but not how they work or the impact of such. Second, Chani and Paul’s relationship will be weird. In the books Paul and Chani’s relationship was a very loving and supportive one (Note: there was conflict when Paul married Irulian and made Chani his concubine but in large the relationship made sense) but in the movie version their relationship is much more strained than in the original. In order to set up the fact that Paul is an anti-hero earlier than in the books Villeneuve chose to put Paul and Chani at odds. One central plot point of Dune Messiah is that Chani can’t get pregnant because of contraceptives placed in her food by their enemies which leads Paul and Chani into a political plot.

The casting is really confusing if it was an adaptation.
The casting might make sense at first because you have: Timothee Chalamet (Paul), Zendaya (Chani), Florence Pugh (Irulian), Jason Momoa (Duncan Idaho), Rebecca Ferguson (Lady Jessica); all recurring characters. Then you get to Nakoa-Wolf Momoa as Leto II and Ida Brooke as Ghanima . These Characters do not show up until the end of the book as infants. Even more it is confirmed that the movie takes place fourteen years after the previous instalment in the franchise and given that Jason Momoa’s son is 16 this means that Leto must be portrayed around that same age. This converges the plot of the second and third book onto the same timeline.
Final thoughts
Since I have read the Second book I have had thoughts that it will not be the best movie ever adapted in fact I thought it will make a horrible movie. I regained hope with comments from Villeneuve saying he intended to make it an anti-hero story until I got to the point when I saw the casting and I was disheartened. It makes no sense to have characters from a different book in the series to me in this adaptation. I have no idea what they are going to do but I am both equally terrified and excited to see what they and watch in theatres.
