Odysseus’s change over the course of epic the musical. (based off of Homer’s the Odyssey)

What is epic?

Epic is a musical version of the Odyssey that is unique in the way that anyone was allowed to audition and it was entirely online. In epic Odysseus is forced to go to war and leaves behind his infant son and wife. Ten years later he wins the war without losing a single member of his crew. But his journey home is interfered with by several of the Gods. on his way home between poseidon the cyclops scylla and zeus he loses every single one of his men. He is then trapped on Calypso’s island for seven years. But he survives to make it home. He was at war for ten years, sailed home for three and was trapped for seven, his infant son was twenty by the time he made it home.

Odysseus Reluctance to kill

In Epic the musical Athena tells Odysseus to kill the cyclops but instead he tells the cyclops to remember Odysseus of Ithaca next time he has a choice to end a life. He also tells Athena that mercy is a rule more of this world could learn to know. could learn to know. Throughout the story he shows mercy and kills at a minimum. In the first song he is told he has to murder an infant because the infant will grow up to avenge his father and kill Odysseus’ family.

The Monster

In one line of an animatic (by gigi on youtube) of the musical during the song “Just a man”, when he is told to kill the infant Odysseus, reflection becomes a monster, But this monster represents Odysseus internal struggle . But every time in that song he shoves the being out except for the last time where he finally kills the infant.

The internal struggle

Throughout the song he is fighting this monster. But in the song Monster where a key change takes place Odysseus’s shadow turns into the monster the monster holds out a hand and Odysseus takes it. After “monster” in the song “different beast”, Odysseus kills a pack of sirens that represents the first life Odysseus takes willingly, as his sword comes down on the siren, Odysseus changes to this monster and continues to kill the entire pack of sirens.

The Key Change

When Odysseus is in the underworld he finds a prophet. The prophet tells Odysseus’ future he says “there is a world where I help you get home but that is not a world I  know.” Odysseus rages and promises his men that “if I have to drop another infant of a wall THEN I’LL BECOME THE MONSTER” he then kills his way home.

Mercy

Mercy plays a huge role in The musical because Athena and Poseidon both are against mercy. When Athena tells Odysseus to kill the cyclops he replies mercy is a skill more of this world could learn. Throughout the musical Odysseus has an internal struggle because of two traits: ruthlessness and mercy.

Ruthlessness

The main enemy in Epic the musical is Poseidon the god of the sea.  Poseidon is trying to teach Odysseus ruthlessness. In the song “ruthlessness” Poseidon says “I mean you totally could have avoided this if you had just killed my son.” Poseidon’s son The cyclops that Odysseus shows mercy upon was left in pain, so Poseidon tells him that “ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves.” he also says “ you are far too nice, mercy has a price!” These two lines are showing how mercy is frowned upon.

Who Odysseus kills.

The first person Odysseus kills is the infant; he did it very reluctantly. Odysseus spared the cyclops even after it killed his best friend. He doesn’t let any man be left behind at Scerees island. After the song Monster Odysseus kills an entire pack of sirens, sacrifices all of his men’s lives, slaughters a monster named charybdis, and shows no mercy upon Poseidon.

For Penolope and Telemachus

He only ever is convinced to kill when he is told his wife and son will die if he doesn’t.Zues tells Odysseus that the infant will grow to kill his wife, that infant is now dead. Poseidon threatens to “Raise the tides so high all of Ithaca will die” after saying that Odysseus can’t kill him so Odysseus stabs Poseidon with his own trident until he is unable to even speak.

I decided to make this article because I love music, if you clicked on this you love music. You saw the title, you know this is gonna be cringe (just like me fr).

#6:Look at this from ‘Helluva Boss’

The song is about this guy (the person in the picture (no that is not a girl its a guy, cmon its 2024 keep up)) trying to distract these other guys who kidnapped him and his friend while the friend tries to break them out, it’s such a dumb song and it’s so stupid but I love it so go listen to it.

#5: A Little Theorizing by The Stupendium

This song is an homage to MatPat after he retired, this song IS a collaboration so it’s not some cringey fan song, it’s just a cringey MatPat song chock full of references to his videos (I get all of them). I suggest you listen to the music video version of it though because at the end it says “that’s just a theory, a GAME THEORY

#4: Dumb Dumb by Mazie

I’m pretty sure everyone knows this song from those 2022 animation memes but one day I was bored and found it on my computer so I thought ‘screw it might as well’. Now it’s in my favorites album. The song is about how everyone is dumb and disappointment can happen to anyone anytime…This song is kinda depressing now that I think about it

#3: Taking What’s Not Yours by TV Girl

TWNY is about a man who’s coping with his girlfriend breaking up with him and she left everything at his place and never came back to get her stuff, and vice versa so womp womp buddy.

This is your average Biggie song if i’m gonna be honest, It’s just Brooklyn, Cubs, being rich, him being a good rapper, and girls and some more expensive cars, and a lot more girls and “substances”. The song is just him flexing…Oh yeah Puff Daddy is there too.

Broadway Records Releases Its First Album With Averno Creators

Averno, a fictional universe created by TikTok stars Morgan Smith, August (Auggie) Greenwood, and Sushi Soucy, has signed a deal with Broadway Records – they’ve released the first of three albums they’ve recorded with them.

Broadway Records signed a deal with these composers not even a month ago on September 9th. These young creators have individual albums that are connected. The albums are Willow, Bittersummer, and Over and Out. Willow was released on September 25th.

Willow

Willow, a musical that takes place under a willow tree, is about two couples, a little girl, and her imaginary friend. The musical takes place in three different timelines – 2006, 2011, and 2012. They all connect through one thing – the willow tree they meet under. They released the concept album for this musical on Spotify, Google Play, Tidal, and more

Willow was recently featured in a Playbill article about one of the songs in the album. Christy Altomare, known for her role as Anya in Anastasia on Broadway, sang the tenth song from the album – “How To Let Go”. The song is sung by Cassia, a daughter of the forest, to Grace – a wild, sharp girl.

Averno

Averno was created by Morgan Smith in 2019. It is a transmedia, interlocking universe that spans across social media, comics, musicals, and more. Since it was created, the team has expanded to include 60 other artists from 14 countries. Many people on the team and in the fanbase have described Averno as the feeling of belonging and home.

The Averno team hosts events that have to do with the small town, ranging from an online summer camp to school. They have street teams, discords, Instagram group chats, and more.

Come Home

Another album they’ve released is Come Home. Come Home was a massive event within the fanbase, with vague promotions about “August 27th” flooding through TikTok and Twitter.

The EP consisted of three different songs, each from different musicals. “The Forest Hymn”, the first song on the EP, gives more insight into the lore of Averno. It’s cryptic and vague, leaving listeners with an odd sense of peace and fear. The second song, “How To Let Go”, was one of the first listens we got into Willow. “Nova Phone Home”, the final song, is from the musical Over and Out, which will be released later this year. It’s about Nova and how she feels lost and alone at A New School, Averno’s college.

Morgan, August, and Sushi have expressed their excitement for their musicals on social media, and the fandom is showing no less, if not more, enthusiasm as for what’s to come.
