Top Gun Maverick is a sequel to the movie Top Gun. Both movies feature fighter jets as the main theme.
In Top Gun Maverick, Captain Pete (callsign Maverick) Mitchell gets put back into the program Top Gun where he was 30 years prior in Top Gun.
While in Top Gun, Maverick is in the program Top Gun, in the second movie, Top Gun Maverick, Maverick is training the pilots in Top Gun.
Now you may be thinking, “What is the program Top Gun?” Well, the Top Gun program is a program where you learn to become the best of the best. Learning air combat maneuvering tactics and techniques to selected naval aviators and naval flight officers, who return to their operating units as surrogate instructors. Just like Maverick.
Maverick must teach Phoenix, Bob, Hangman, and Rooster. Along with Payback and Coyote. While Maverick taught many others, these pilots got to be a part of the mission.
Maverick is called back to Top Gun where he learns about the mission he must train his pilots to do. A uranium enrichment plant is their target for it is a direct threat to their allies.
In the first Top Gun, Maverick’s buddy, Goose, dies. His wife tells Maverick to not let her son join Top Gun but it does not go as planned. Maverick pulled Roosters papers for that was the only way to not have Goose’s son fly in Top Gun. Maverick and Rooster don’t get along at the start because Rooster knows Maverick pulled his papers.
They must fly through a canyon in an F18 fighter jet, destroy the plant, and pull 9 G’s to leave the area surrounding the plant (a huge mountain named Coffin Corner) Along the canyons are enemy SAMs or surface-to-air missiles. This is why they must fly in the canyon and not above it.
According to Boeing, “The combat-proven Super Hornet (F18) delivers cutting-edge, next-generation multi-role strike fighter capability, outdistancing current and emerging threats well into the future. The Super Hornet has the capability, flexibility, and performance necessary to modernize the air or naval aviation forces of any country.”
They first start by launching the F18s/Daggers off the carrier. Maverick whose wingmen are Phoenix and Bob, Rooster whose wingmen are Coyote and Payback. They also launch Tomahawk Missiles from the carrier to destroy the enemy’s nearby fighter station. As the missiles hit and the Daggers are flying, nearby are two bandits. The daggers must continue with the mission and continue moving. Rooster and his wingman fall behind while Maverick and his wingman keep going. They pass multiple SAMs and are told two bandits are headed their way. Maverick and his wingman fly over a small part of the mountain and launch the first “Miracle.” It hits the vent leading into the plant and creates a gap for the next Daggers. Maverick then must fly up Coffin Corner. The next pair of Daggers come over the small part of the mountain and launch the second miracle. But they have trouble with a camera and must launch it ‘blind.’ Fortunately, it still hits but must fly over Coffin Corner.
After all this, it’s a dog fight all the way home. They dodge missiles from enemy SAMs and launch flairs. They make it except for one. Maverick. They are ordered to not help him. But as Maverick is on the ground, an enemy’s helicopter comes in. It starts firing at Maverick. No one can help Mav but himself. But someone didn’t listen. Rooster flies by launching a sidewinder into the side of the helicopter but gets smashed by a missile from a SAM. As he parachutes down they find each other. They plan to steal a jet. The jog over to the station they blew up. There is still one jet. An F14. A jet Mav mastered in the first Top Gun. They manage to steal it without anyone noticing. But the two bandits come into sight. As they exchange signs, Mav doesn’t know what he’s talking about. The two bandits move into weapons envelope. Maverick knows this is a dogfight. As he blasts the first bandit into pieces with his jet-mounted machine gun, the second comes behind him trying to lock onto him to fire a missile. He manages to escape and have him run into a mountain. They are free but out of ammo. A new jet comes in front of them launching a missile at them. They launch their flares to evade but the jet follows. They decide to eject but it doesn’t work. They are done for. As the jet launches a missile at Mav and Rooster, the jet blows up. What happened? A spare Dagger, Hangman, missile the jet down with his F18. They fly back to the carrier with only a broken wheel and a downed engine. They make it safely.
Top Gun Maverick is a movie many people love and for good reasons. Top Gun Maverick is a movie you should watch too.
