Harvey Hubbell the Second

Harvey Hubbell the Second

Do you know who Harvey Hubbell the second is? He was an extraordinary inventor, his best invention is still used today, but in a more developed version, do you know what that is? It is the pull socket, since then it’s been modified into the electric socket, but the basic design of this invention is still used.

Harvey Hubbell’s way to success

Harvey Hubbell the second was born on December 20, 1857, in Brooklyn, New York. His birth was the key to the start of many of our advanced technologies,

Harvey Hubbell was the founder of a manufacturing facility in a loft on Middle Street in Bridgeport, 1888. His manufacturing business was an early success, but not long after, he would have greater success with invention.

In 1891, he invented the Separable Attachment-Plug, the electric switch design. This later developed to the pull-chain electric light socket, 1896.The pull-chain electric light socket was modified again on November 8, 1904. This was modified into a detachable electric plug, the first ever in the United States.

He died on December 17, 1927.

Harvey Hubbell the Third

When Harvey Hubbell the third’s father, Harvey Hubbell the second, died, he took over the manufacturing facility as president, and only when he was at the young of 26.

Bridgeport Library, said that, “The firm grew from a $1 million annual business in 1927 to a $21 million a year business in 1963.” Basically saying, Harvey Hubbell the third improved his father’s manufacturing businesses income drastically as he drove the company in a money making path that does good to the country while they’re at it.

Though his father did a lot for the company, Harvey Hubbell also invented many of the products. Even with new manufacturing devices, the pull socket was, of course, still the most remembered. Considering that it was a big step to advance in technology.

This business was a great success, acknowledging the fact that the business still stands today. The business is now named Hubbell Industries, and the headquarters is in Shelton Connecticut, but it is still found all over the world.

Next time you go to plug something in, or to charge a phone with a charger, think about how far back the electric plug went, and know that it was 1896, that man was a key role in charging your phone or getting technology access. Always be grateful for this man, who helped with our technology advancement,  and all the others who helped with this invention. Along with the modifiers who make amazing technology for us.

Copy & Paste

Copy & Paste

Have you ever had to write an essay for one of your school or work? You were just lazy at the time, so you looked up an article and copied and pasted it into a google docs. But, you think for a moment, who invented copy/paste? This is the guy you probably didn’t know existed, but you should thank him a bunch: Larry Tesler.

Larry Tesler was born on April 24, 1945, in The Bronx, New York. He attended Stanford, to study computer science. He had then started working for Xerox’s Palto Alto Research Center, or PARC, in 1973.

Larry had joined many companies after PARC, he started working for Steve Jobs and Apple in 1980, teaching them some techniques at PARC. In 2001-2005 he had also joined Amazon. His last company he joined was Yahoo, in 2008. And after all that time, he was finally an independent consultant, starting in 2009, and ever since.

He had helped all these companies, and helped us, with the ease of not having to type out exact letter for letter, word for word. He developed copy and paste over the time period of 3 years, 1973-1976.

After his long journey of computer science, he died –quite recently– on February 16, 2020, at age 74. Next time you copy and paste something, thank this guy for everything he did.

Where Did Air Conditioning Come From?

Where Did Air Conditioning Come From?

How often do you walk around a house or a building and you feel the nice cool air? But do you really know who got us air conditioning in the first place, if you don’t, read on and learn all about Willis Carrier.

Willis Carrier was born in Angola, New York, November 26, 1876. He got an engineering degree from Cornell, and then got a job at Buffalo Forge Company. After, finally making it to his biggest accomplishment: created the world’s first (modern) air conditioning system, in 1902. He installed this new invention in New York, Sackett & Wilhelms printing plant in Brooklyn.

Carrier didn’t stop there though, he developed the Rational Psychrometric Formulae, to explain more about the air conditioning system. And he kept going, in 1915 he made his own business, called Carrier Engineering Corporation.

Carrier Willis was also the cause of some first accomplishments in American history, such as, he hired America’s first woman to work as air conditioning engineer, in 1917. In 1931, a vessel, M.V. Victoria, was the first to make a voyage with Carrier’s air conditioning system.

Willis Carrier’s successes kept going on, even when he died on October 7, 1950, in New York N.Y. He was included into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1985. In 1998, he was named in one of TIME magazine’s as in the article “100 Most Influential People of the 2oth Century.

Whenever you feel that cool breeze in your house on a summer day, thank Willis Carrier for it.

How To Clean Your Room

How To Clean Your Room

Have you ever walked into your room, but then you find it messy? You become so frustrated that your mom has to make you clean your room before you can go to your friend’s house, so you start cleaning. Only to know that this will take you the whole day, but you don’t know a better way to clean a room, so then you go and look up articles to clean a room. You find this! This will teach you how to clean up your room in the best way possible, so don’t demise yourself just yet!

1. Throw away trash

Trash can be all over the place, and it can get lost in unclean rooms. Even if you have extra papers laying around, throw them away! Trash is the easy way to start cleaning up your room, but make sure when you’re throwing away trash, that it’s nothing important!

2. Clean up clothes

Cleaning your clothes can be an exhausting process, and when you put it off it can add up to the mess in your room. Luckily, clothes are an easy thing to clean, all you have to do is sort the clothes into dirty and clean. Put the dirty clothes in your laundry basket and fold the clean clothes then put them where they belong.

3. School/Work Stuff

School and work stuff can be very important, and you definitely need to keep it in a safe place, so you don’t accidentally damage important papers. All you need to do is put them in a pile, then put them neatly in a folder, backpack, briefcase, wherever you keep your work/school items. One important thing to remember is NEVER stuff it in your transportation for it, keep it in a nice place to prevent it from crumbling in there.

4. Toys/Collections

Toys can be all over a room, and it can be hard to clean them all up, but don’t lose hope just yet. You don’t even have to really clean them up, just organize them. You could do this in a small spot in your room, and make a neat pile of these. Now, some toys that could be in your room are useless. You like them, but don’t play with them. If this is happening, throw them away! Trust me you won’t miss them, but if that is too much for you, give them to a sibling or a friend.

5. Anything else

If there is too much stuff, break it into categories, like the ones above. This might seem like a lot, but it isn’t, all you have to do is pick up an item, then find where it belongs. Some of these items could be missing items that you were supposed to clean, and those are easy, because you already know where those items belong.

Now you have a clean, spacious room! With every step you take in your room, is pride and confidence!

Who Actually Made the Modern Flag Design?

Most people think that Betsy Rose was the designer of the American flag, but that’s wrong, she only made the flag. The real real designer was a 17 year old boy, he designed it for a high school project.

How It Got Started

As I mentioned, the flag was made by a 17 year old boy. This boy, Robert G. Heft designed this flag in 1958. This only happened because he was assigned it as an American history project, and after their discussion of adding Hawaii and Alaska as states. Heft was inspired, and decided he was going to make a flag, with stars for Hawaii and Alaska.

He worked on this project for twelve and a half hours to figure out the arrangement with the new coming states and to sew. Even though Heft didn’t know how to sew, he put all his effort in, and only to get graded a B- by his teacher, Stanley Pratt.

Stanley Pratt’s reasons were that “anyone could make the flag” and “lacked originality”. His teacher also asked him if he knew how many states there were in America, because he added more stars for the new states.

His teacher had then said if Congress could adopt it, then he would receive a better grade.

Heft sent his flag off to the Congressman of Ohio, which was at the time, Representative Walter Moeller. Over 1,500 was the number of how many entries he had won.

Because of this change, we have a new American flag that became official on July 4, 1959. He even was personally invited to Washington D.C. by the 34th president, Dwight D. Eisenhower. But more importantly, Robert Heft got his “A”.

What the Flag Means

The flag that Robert Heft designed is symbolic, in many ways.

The Stripes

The 13 stripes on the flag are important because they resemble the 13 colonies. The 13 colonies are Eastern states, that were the first states settled there in America. Including: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

The Stars

The stars on the flag represent the states. There are 50 states and 50 stars. Again, there used to be 48 because Alaska and Hawaii weren’t official states yet, but because of Heft’s care for the states, we have an even number: 50.

The Colors

Some may not know this, but the colors are also symbolic. Stated in pbs.org “Red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.”

Sounds like a perfect American flag, with symbolism for the stars, stripes and colors, that all match the country really well. Every time you see the flag, or say the Pledge of Allegiance, remember what it represents. And always remember Robert Heft, the man who made the flag at age 17, for a high school project.

Endangered Environment

Endangered Environment

Our world is an extremely amazing place, but we don’t respect it, and take care of it as much as we should. All around the world people are endangering animals, and damaging our environment, for money or simply just blindly. We walk around in our everyday lives, not realizing what we or others are doing to our land.

Many animals are critically endangered here are a few, African Forest Elephant, Amur Leopard, Black Rhino, Borean Orangutan, Cross River Gorilla, Eastern Lowland Gorilla, Hawksbill Turtle, and the list goes on and on. These animals are endangered because we want to sell some of these features, or they could get wrapped up in pollution that we carelessly leave everywhere.

There is not a lot we can do to help these animals, without them feeling uncomfortable by their presence. But, we can donate to websites, so they can help these animals get back to a full population, as well as keeping an eye on them, to make sure they are safe.

Pollution is caused by every human, they end up in the oceans, on land, in cherished environments, and in the air. Cars are on the roads every minute, that threaten the air with the chemicals that come out, same with factories that release pollutants into the air, such as gasses, and chemicals. These pollutants in the air can not only affect our health, but it also can affect our Environment.

Ocean pollution: A big threat, in our world. Not only does it endanger our beloved sea life, but if we don’t stop that from happening, the sea life ecosystem will get messed up. If we pollute the ocean the sea life, gets tangled up with the pollution, and that is one way that can cause harm. Another one is, if we don’t manage the sea life ecosystem, there could be too many fish or too little fish. We can’t manage the ecosystem, when the surface or under the water is polluted. And the ocean is not the only place that could lose control of the ecosystem, it can also apply to land, being too many mammals, and even the air, having too many birds.

Polluted air, we can help it. You could get a car that doesn’t run on gas, but if not…We can try to limit our car rides, if your car runs on gas. Now, you do need to drive to work or to other places, of course, but those extra car rides you might take sometimes, we should cut down. You could also get different kinds of plants, and grow them to help the soil. Trees also can help release new oxygen into the air, so we can breathe in fresh air, instead of polluted air.

There are 8.7 million species currently on the planet today. But, that number is going to keep going down, and when people start realizing it, it will be too late, and not every species is going to stay, some will be endangered or extinct. We have to make a stand, and help our environment, to help endangered animals, but it’s not just for that, it’s for us, people.

In some parts of the world, there are massive dumps. Dumps that people live in, they sleep and eat there, if they can find something edible. This is the kind of stuff that happens and we don’t even realize it.

The more we endanger our environment, the more of our beautiful Earth goes away. So make a stand, and help donate to organizations, to help all these causes, to fix the endangerment, and helping the pollution.
