Lots of Animals are Going Extinct!

Lots of Animals are Going Extinct!

Animalsaroundtheglobe says “There are now 41,415 species on the IUCN Red List, and 16,306 of them are endangered species threatened with extinction.” We all need to do our help to lower the endangered list.

5 endangered animals

#1: Javan Rhinoceros

There are less than 75 Javan Rhinoceros left around the world. These Rhinoceros live in Ujung Kulon National Park. They are dying off because of habitat loss, diseases being spread, and poaching. If u don’t know what poaching is, it is when people kill an animal illegally. Usually, the animals have something valuable like animal fur or teeth. Lots of animals are going extinct because of poaching.

 #2: Tigers

Tigers are endangered because of poaching, habitat loss, trading of tiger parts, global warming, and human conflict. If you see poaching please contact someone who can help. Such as the police or a park ranger. There are only 3890 tigers left in the wild. In some countries there are less than 200 hundred tigers but, over the last few years, the tiger population has risen.  #3: Asian Elephants

Asian elephants are beautiful creatures. There are fewer than 50,000 due to being threatened by loss of habitat, habitat degradation, fragmentation, and poaching. They have been on the endangered list since 1986, around 35 years. Their numbers have dropped 50% over the last 75 years. They are located in and around India. They play an important role in their environment. They limited the growth of vegetation and spread the seeds of the plants they eat. Theweek.com says that the Asian Elephants will go extinct in around 12 years. So around 2033.

 #4: Bornean Orangutans

Bornean orangutans and Sumatran orangutans have lost their homes from the destruction of the rain forest. They usually live up in the trees so it might be hard to change to their new environment. They have been on the endangered list since 2008. That’s around 12 or 13 years. Over 13,000 Sumatran Orangutans left and 104,000 Bornean Orangutans left. They both live around the rain forests of Southeast Asian islands (Borneo and Sumatra). They play an important role in seed dispersal and keeping the forest at its best. If they were to disappear then a lot of plants and trees would disappear with it and some other animals that live in those trees and feed off those plants might even become endangered.

 #5: Mountain Gorillas

Mountain gorillas population is only 604 and all of them live in parks located in east-central Africa. They are going extinct mostly because of habitat loss, hunting, and diseases. Gorillafund.org says that gorillas play an important part in “dispersing seeds, letting in light, and shaping plant communities within the forest.” They also mention, “Protecting gorillas helps protect these other vital plants, animals, and insects as well.” so without gorillas, their habitat wouldn’t be the same.

With your help, we can help take all of these animals off the endangered list and help them stay off.

#1 Pangolin

The animal that is going extinct in 2020 is the Pangolin. An animal that looks like it has a hard shell to protect it on the outside, which is called keratin scales. Those scales on its body are one of the biggest reasons it’s going extinct, many people hunt these animals done and sell them on the black market for their scales. They are sold at the black market for about $3000/kg. There are about 8 different species of the Pangolin that are in danger right now, and that is the number of species there are. These animals are the most trafficked animal in the world right now. As sad as it is, this took a huge amount of survival with some populations – they are critically endangered. The IUCN says about every 5 minutes a Pangolin is taken from the wild.

#2 Rhino

The three of the five species, that are among being critically endangered. The three species that are in more danger than the others are the Black Rhino, Javan Rhino, and the Sumatran Rhino. The Javan Rhino is the most endangered, with the total of their population being at 60 in Java Indonesia. While the Sumatran Rhino is critically endangered, there are about 100 of these kinds of Rhinos living today in the wild. The Black Rhino is also classified by the IUCN as critically endangered with three subspecies said to be extinct in 2011. The Black Rhinos are endangered because of their horns, they are considered medical. The demand for them is high among the poachers who hunt for them and other people.

#3 Tigers

Tigers have always been hunted for the pattern on their fur. Out of the 9 tiger species, 3 are already extinct, sadly. Many of these animals are going extinct but the few that have the biggest threat are the South China Tiger and Sumatran Tiger. The South China Tiger is thought to be extinct, in the wild since it hasn’t been spotted since the 1970s. Less than 500 of the Sumatran tigers are still alive and hopefully, they can make their species go up in a few years.

#4 Vaquita

The Vaquita is the rarest marine mammal in the world. It has been said that there are less than 100 of them to this day. A few people had said that they thought they would have gone extinct by 2018, but they are still living just they are critically endangered. These animals only exist in the Gulf of California. They were never hunted by others, but their population is going down because of their kind getting stuck in illegal gill nets which were only intended in catching the totoaba.

#5 Saola

These animals are known as the Asian Unicorn. This discovery of these animals was made in 1992, which was also when they got that name of theirs. According to many websites that I have found, this animal is one of the rarest large mammals to exist. This unique and rare animal has been said by the IUCN to be critically endangered. These animals are hunted either for wildlife trade, bush-meat or for traditional Asian medicine. Saola is one of the very few animals with a large price on its head. The Saola does get caught in general slaughter and they get killed incidentally, as by-catch.
