A Man Named D.B. Cooper

A Man Named D.B. Cooper

On the afternoon of the 24th of November, 1971, a man carrying a black attaché case and referred to himself as “Dan Cooper” entered the Portland International Airport and bought a one-way ticket on Flight #305; Portland, Oregon to Seattle, Washington. Cooper was assigned seat 18C and ordered a drink before takeoff.

Cooper was a white male, wearing a white shirt with a dark business suit and tie. He appeared to be in his mid-40’s and was a quiet man with little accent. Boarding the plane he drew no attention to himself.

The plane, a Boeing 727 aircraft, carried 42 occupants in total. 36 passengers (including Cooper), Captain William A. Scott, First Officer William “Bill” J. Rataczak, Flight Engineer Harold E. Anderson, and three flight attendants, Alice Hancock, Tina Mucklow, and Florence Schaffner.

The Hijacking

The aircraft left Portland on schedule at 2:50 pm PST. Shortly after, around 3:00 pm, Cooper handed flight attendant Schaffner a note. At the time, men traveling alone would usually hand flight attendants notes with phone numbers or hotel room numbers written on them, so Schaffner assumed it was only a business man’s phone number. Schaffner ignored the note, quietly slipping it unopened into her purse. The next time she passed, Cooper whispered to her, “Miss, you’d better look at that note. I have a bomb.”

The note read in neat handwriting, “Miss – I have a bomb in my briefcase and want you to sit by me.” The shocked attendant did as she was told. She then asked to see the bomb. Cooper opened his cheap case and showed a glimpse of two rows of four red sticks, which was presumed to be dynamite, all connected to a mass of wires that led to a cylindrical battery. Soon, Schaffner was walking to the captain with a new note of Cooper’s demands: $200,000 in negotiable American currency, two front parachutes, and two back parachutes, all given to him by 5:00 pm.

After reading the note, Captain Scott immediately contacted air traffic control. They then contacted the Seattle Police who contacted the FBI. The FBI urgently called the airline’s president, Donald Nyrop, who then stated to comply with the demands given by Cooper. After this, Cooper instructed the flight attendant to return the note to him, removing incriminating evidence and leaving the exact wording unknown, but everyone present agreed that the note contained the words, “no funny business”.

With Schaffner in the cockpit, Cooper moved to the window seat so that flight attendant Mucklow could sit in the isle to act as a liaison between them and the cockpit. Cooper told Mucklow to tell the captain to stay in the air until the money and parachutes were ready. He also made additional demands; when landing in Seattle, all passengers would remain onboard until Cooper had the money, then he would let them go. The plane circled Puget Sound for about 2 hours to give the FBI enough time to obtain the needed resources. While the plane was circling, Mucklow asked why Cooper was hijacking this airlines specifically. Cooper replied, “It’s not because I have a grudge against your airlines, it’s just because I have a grudge,” he stopped and said that this airlines just fulfilled his needs.

The $200,000 was received in $20 bills, with random serial numbers which complied with Cooper’s request. Every bill had a serial number starting with “L”, however, specifically planned by the FBI. Tacoma’s McChord Air Force Base offered to supply the parachutes, but Cooper rejected this offer; he wanted regular civilian parachutes, not military grade ones. Seattle Police eventually contacted a local skydiving school, and bought the two front parachutes from them. The two back parachutes were obtained from a local stunt pilot.

In the Sky Again

At 5:46 PST, the plane arrived in the Seattle-Tacoma airport. Cooper told them that only one representative was allowed to bring the money and parachutes, and the only entrance/exit would be the plane’s front door. When this played out to Coopers demands, Mucklow traveled to the front entrance to receive the supplies from Al Lee, Northwest Orient’s Seattle operations manager. The 36 passengers were then released, with Cooper keeping several crew members (flight attendants Hancock and Schaffner being an exception, as they requested to debark from the plane), and the plane took off for a set course to Mexico City.

Sometime after takeoff, Cooper asked Mucklow to lower the back aircraft stairs. Mucklow expressed her fear many times of doing this, to which Cooper replied saying he would do it himself. He instructed Mucklow to go to the cockpit and close the curtain partition between Coach and First Class. He told her to not return.

By 8:13 pm, the warning light for the aft staircase lit. Pilot William Scott asked if he needed assistance, with Cooper replying his final message anyone ever heard from him again, “No.” The plane’s tail pitch upwards, and Cooper jumped out of the aircraft with the parachutes and money, never to be seen again.

Cooper’s fate still remains a mystery to this day.

Satan Panonski: the Craziest Performer the World’s ever seen.

Satan Panonski: the Craziest Performer the World’s ever seen.

There has never been a person in Croatia who simultaneously attracted and repelled as well as shocked and fascinated people as much as Ivica Čuljak, Better known as Satan Panonski. This punk performer, poet, writer, and painter is a unique figure emerging from the second-wave punk scene. Some see him only as a mentally ill and impulsive person with little to no artistic value. However, behind these aesthetics of shock, self-harm, and eccentric behavior, there was an incredibly thoughtful, poetic being, which was later shown in Ljubica Anđelković Džambic’s book, “Satan Panonski’s body of resistance – auto-destructive body art in Croatian performing arts and practices” (Rough Translation), published in 2019.

Self-destruction artists have existed since the 1960s, but they have often been singled out because it’s tough practice and bodily harm is often not considered art. However, in art, there is this aspiration or tendency to go beyond the norm that is determined for us by mainstream culture. The self-destructive performance is perhaps the only artistic act that, in those few seconds of injury, through a strong, uncontrolled manner, is a moment of “freedom”. Satan Panonski instinctively felt this power of self-harm on stage, but he also described it very openly as a personal need, because his poetry, despite the brutal images he formed, was not enough to get out of himself all the despair, frustration, and anger he felt. By the act of “jumping out of his skin”, he achieved a sort of understanding that helped him, at least for a little while. He created poems that combined that shock and punk aesthetic alongside his music.

He wrote a lot about his creativity. Although shrouded in mystery, Panonski labeled himself as a performance artist rather than as a punk singer, yet punk was the only place where he could be accepted and where such different identities were allowed. Despite his erratic behavior on stage, he wasn’t as frantic, impulsive, and thoughtless as one might think. As shown in, “SATAN PANONSKI: DOKUMENTARAC” is described as “a Serbian student film featuring the best footage of Panonski’s “Hard Blood Shock” Body Art performance.” follows 24 hours in Panonskis life, showing a live performance, psychiatric hospital, and his apartment. During the live show, Panonski reads many poems of his before sticking 4 safety pins into his arm. This self-harm skewed many people from finishing watching the performance, yet Satan was not done yet. He smashed a large alcohol bottle upon his head, before drinking his own blood.

Many say that Satan Panonski is the “Croatian GG Allin.”

Kevin Michael “GG” Allin, who was born Jesus Christ Allin, was an American punk rock musician who performed and recorded with many groups during his career. He’s best known for his controversial live performances, in which he often defecated on stage and assaulted audience members. In the video, GG Allin – Austin, TX 18 May 1993, the rockstar is shown jumping into the audience and punching his loyal fans as well as joining the moshpits. The comparison spawns from the sheer shock factor which happened during their live performances.

Panonski was found dead on January 27, 1992 (aged 31) in Vinkovci, Croatia. A little over a year later, GG Allin passed away from a heroin overdose on June 28, 1993 (aged 36) in New York City, U.S. Him, and some fans were walking around the city after a live performance before reaching one of Allin’s friend, Johnny Pukes’ house. GG acquired heroin from another party member, which he later overdosed on. Weirdly enough, Allin’s funeral took place on July 3, 1993, in his native New Hampshire, at the St. Rose Cemetery, Littleton. At his funeral, Allin’s bloated corpse was dressed in his black leather jacket and trademark jock strap. Allin’s funeral became a low-level party where his friends and fans danced around his corpse.

The Elisa Lam Mystery

The Elisa Lam Mystery

Elisa Lam was a 21-year-old college student from Canada with Bipolar Disorder. She was on a west coast tour &, on January 1st, 2013, she checked into the Cecil Hotel. The Cecil Hotel opened on December 20th, 1924, in Downtown Los Angeles. Ever since it opened its doors, it has been the center of too many issues making it one of the most notorious places in the US. It even hosted famous serial killers like Richard Ramirez & Jack Unterweger.

She initially checked into a type of hotel room where she had roommates but had to be moved because of odd behavior. We can get a grasp on what behavior they’re talking about in the security camera footage that went viral of her in the elevator taken on February 1st. If you have never seen it, the general rundown is that she walks in, presses most of the buttons to the floors, walks out of the elevator, walks back in. She then jumps in & out of the elevator, hides in the corner, slowly looks out, leaves, & starts doing hand gestures, & finally leaves the elevator for good. Mind you, during all of this, the elevator never once closed its doors or left the original floor until after she walked away from the elevator at the end. This is the last sighting of Elisa Lam alive. People were immediately worried, her family flying over to help look, her case being on the news, & police searching the hotel to the fullest extent. They even brought dogs on the roof, but they didn’t detect her scent.

18 days after the security footage the hotel starts receiving complaints from guests complaining that the water pressure is very low, tasted funny, & even discoloration of the water, some of the people’s water even being black. The hotel sent Santiago Lopez, a hotel maintenance worker, to check out the 1000 gallon tanks on the roof. There he found the lifeless body of Elisa Lam, naked with her clothes floating around with her. They were the same clothes seen on the security footage. To get on the roof you would need to enter with either a keycard or if the alarms were disarmed which only Santiago could do. After getting on the roof you would need to climb the ten-foot tanks, move the 20lbs lid, climb in, & close it again. This would be impossible since there wasn’t a ladder on the roof or any other way up there. She also could’ve gotten there from the fire escape but still couldn’t have climbed up there. The reason the dogs didn’t find her when they had searched on the roof, it’s because the lid was closed. The tanks are very tightly closed, & of course, they didn’t suspect the tanks at the time. That’s all we truly know about the case, but there are a million theories out there, some of those we will now go over.

Drugs

A theory is that she was on drugs or hallucinogens which would explain how she was acting in the elevator. This theory was quickly debunked however because a toxicology report says she was not on any drugs or alcohol.

Bipolar Episode

Since she had Bipolar disorder this was an obvious cause of death to many. She was off of her four medications according to the toxicology report, it would explain the behavior, & more. Though it still wouldn’t make sense how she made it up there since she was a small woman who wasn’t very strong.

Suicide

Another theory was that she killed herself because she was depressed. She had a blog where she was very open about her disorder, & many people think based on how she had been recently she did it herself. But, many things still didn’t add up with that theory.

Murdered by a hotel worker

This is one of the most plausible theories. In the elevator video, there is about one minute of missing footage & the only people who could have corrupted it would be staff members. In the video, she also could have been hiding from workers & stuff but stayed out of frame because they know where the cameras are pointing. They are also the only people who could get on the roof & could have easily pretended to be fixing something in the water tank so they brought a ladder, brought her up, dumped her body, & left. The workers at that hotel even had a history of sexually harassing, & in some cases, raping their tenants. An investigator said she seemed to have been strangled, & raped before her body was dumped which would explain why her clothes were off. The LAPD failed to do a rape test as well as a rape drug test.

Possession

Many people believe this theory because the Cecil Hotel is said to be haunted. Many people claim to have been choked by thin air, someone even dying by choking with no culprit. They think she was possessed & was forced into killing herself. If you believe in possession it seems fairly plausible but, if you don’t like most, it sounds dumb.

Elevator Game

The elevator game is a Korean game in which you travel to an alternate dimension. It is said that when you return you are extremely disoriented & confused which could explain her behavior. I don’t know much about the game, but the rules are to the right. However, she is never seen  playing the game or following any of the rules.

Dark Water

A movie from 2005 titled Dark Water, perfectly portrays everything that happened to Elisa. People in the hotel were saying that their water was really weird, & then found a decomposing body in the water tank. In the movie, there were also elevator problems, & the main character was also talking to some imaginary thing. The main character was even wearing the same clothes as Elisa. The theory is that she or someone else wanted to recreate the events of this movie. We have seen this theory in many cases before, so it isn’t too odd.

Tuberculosis Test Coverup

At the time of her stay, there was an outbreak of tuberculosis in the downtown LA area. The strange thing was that the tests that were being conducted were called LAM ELISA. The main drug of treatment for tuberculosis is said to cause delusion & abnormal behavior. But, once again, the toxicology report shows she had no drugs in her system.

The autopsy report determined that her cause of death was accidental drowning but, we will never truly know. There are so many things that could have been investigated that were not. Believe whatever you want, either by researching more theories, creating new ones, agreeing with one here, or a mix of any of them. Unfortunately, We will never know what happened, & her family will always be asking questions.
