What if our oceans become too polluted to support life? What if our oceans become completely lifeless? Are we headed towards this fate? Well, in our world we have many problems, but our biggest dilemma we face is ocean pollution.
For years now we humans have thrown a great percentage of our trash into the ocean. Over 8 million tons of plastic enter our oceans each year! This action causes many problems such as killing animals, producing bad chemicals, and slowing transportation. If this continues we might very well be on our way to lifeless oceans.
As humans it is our job to take care of this beautiful planet that we live on. Instead we are just chucking our trash into the ocean! We need to find a solution to this problem or it will keep harming others and ourselves.
Ocean Animal Endangerment
Animals are dying because of this awful tragedy. Sea turtles are getting strangled by plastic. Dolphins are drowning in oil and other awful substances. Whales are choking on piles and piles of plastic bottles.
These innocent creatures are being harmed because of the bad choices we have made. Nearly 267 species of marine mammals are being harmed by the plastic and trash in the ocean. But there is a way we can help them.
Even the simplest of things we do can save an animal’s life. We can cut up bottle rings. We can recycle. We can minimize the amount of plastic we use in a day. All of these things help these creatures so much. Imagine if everyone did these things. We could save ocean life entirely!

Chemical and Air Production
When trash is thrown into the ocean it produces chemicals. Most of these chemicals can harm humans. Some of these chemicals can even kill humans. If we keep throwing our trash into the ocean the chemicals will not stop coming.
Also one of the most important things the ocean does for us is it can absorb carbon dioxide to help the environment. When the ocean absorbs the carbon dioxide it can help with climate change too. When there is too much trash in the ocean it can slow or even stop these processes.
Without the ocean absorbing the carbon dioxide we breathe out there would be too much carbon dioxide that it could become a huge problem.
Transportation problems
We humans have a strong desire to travel and explore the world. That is why we have airplanes, cars, and even boats. But there is a problem. The trash in the ocean can slow or stop transportation. Mainly boat transportation is affected such as jet skis, cruise ships, speed boats and many other water transportation devices.
Some parts of the ocean are just filled entirely with trash. One of these parts of the ocean is a section called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This is a collection of marine debris. It is located in the North Pacific Ocean. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is home to nearly 1.8 trillion plastic pieces.
This is only one example of trash oceans. Transportation can no longer access these parts of the ocean which is such a shame.

Human Health Risks
Polluted oceans can most certainly affect human health. Contaminants can enter the food chain. Then if you eat this food it can cause food poisoning, liver damage, or even cancer.
Another way pollution can affect human health is that many people get food supplies from the ocean. They eat fish or other sea creatures to stay alive. If the fish die it can really affect these people’s health. All the pollution in the ocean can really affect human health and safety.
Ways we can Stop Pollution
- Reduce amount of plastic
- Participate in beach cleanup
- Properly dispose of hazardous waste
- Support ocean-friendly organizations
- Reduce carbon footprint
- Support eco-friendly products
- And most importantly educate others
Conclusion
In conclusion, if we can all work together we can stop ocean pollution and make a better environment. If we each commit to making even a small change in the way that we dispose of our waste, together it would make a huge difference!
We can save many animal and human lives! We can make life easier and better! We can make the earth a better place! So go home and start trying to do better and make a change in the world. Together we can stop ocean pollution!
