Speed walking is also known as race walking or power walking in the Olympics. Race walking is a long-distance sport. You usually keep a pace of 4.5 to 5.5 miles per hour. When competing in race walking the races are usually 10km to 20km long, however, they are even longer in some cases.

Coral Reef Bleaching

Coral Reef Bleaching

Coral Reef Bleaching

Have you heard of coral reef bleaching? Coral reef bleaching occurs when high water temperatures kill the tiny organisms that live inside the coral structures. This causes the coral to lose its color and become a ghost white color. The coral can gain its color back however that takes lots of time, and we are running out of time.

What Coral Reef Bleaching Is Doing To The Great Barrier Reef?

The biggest coral reef in the world/ the Great Barrier Reef now has less color than the Caribbeans.

The great barrier reef just experienced its third mass bleaching over a course of five years. This one is said to have been its most widespread bleaching that has ever happened.

The Great Barrier Reef has lost half of its coral in the past forty years because of the water temperatures rising.

Why Are The Water Temperatures Rising?

The water temperatures are rising due to humans. Our cars, trains, houses, airplanes, and factories are putting off harmful emissions into our atmosphere. Those emissions are putting off the heat and the heat is getting trapped in our atmosphere, very little of those emissions are able to escape the atmosphere. This is causing other bad things to happen like our glaciers are melting.

What Will Happen If Things Do Not Change?

Scientists predict that if we do not handle climate change soon all of the coral reefs will be dead by 2100.

Our coral reefs manage how much co2 there is in our oceans, without them there would be too much co2 in the oceans and that would affect the whole world.

Our coral reefs have thousands of species living in them. These species rely on the reefs, without them they would die, and we would have thousands of marine animals go extinct.

How We Are Helping Restore The Great Barrier Reef & Other Reefs

Researchers have found that if you help restore one small part of the reef it will help other parts of the reef meaning it is all connected. This is good and bad, it’s good because that means we can restore the reef faster, but it’s bad because that means the reef could also die faster if we don’t do something soon. Divers are also going down to the reefs and doing coral transplants giving the reefs another chance to thrive. We are also trying to reduce the number of emissions that are going into the atmosphere by having electric cars and trains.

The coronavirus

The coronavirus

The coronavirus

The coronavirus is spreading to the United States of America, the coronavirus is a worldwide public health emergency.

What can you buy to prepare…

A CNN article states, ¨Now, health officials say, is the time for people in the United States prepare.¨ Stocking up on necessities should be a priority. You and each member of your family should have at least a 2 week supply of food, water, and toilet paper. Water may become infected in some states or countries in that case you should stock up on safe water while you can get it. However, our water in Utah is very unlikely to get infected because we have a closed water system. Having an emergency kit should also be something you should include in your storage. Always prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Some good foods to include in your food storage include peanut butter, peanut butter can last a long time and is a great source of energy. Any dehydrated food or powder would also be great food in storage because when adding water it can turn back into its original form. Protein bars are also a great food to store, some kinds can last for long periods of time and are also a great source of energy. Any canned food would also be good, some canned foods can last for 6 or more years.

Schools closing…

If your kid is showing sick symptoms, have them stay home! Although the coronavirus symptoms may not show up till 14 days after, as soon as you or someone else shows any symptoms, have them stay home.

Observe surrounding schools and if they are closing or not. If they are you might want to play it safe and have your kid stay home.

How is the coronavirus spread…

The coronavirus can spread in many ways, say health officials. Coughing and sneezing onto one another is the most common way to spread the virus. Touching an infected person is also a common way to catch the virus. Staying within a 6-foot radius of a sick person or animal will help you not get the virus. Live Science explains how touching a recently infected surface may cause you to catch the coronavirus.

How can you prevent the coronavirus…

Avoid traveling to highly infected areas, such as China, Italy, Iran, Japan, and South Korea. These countries have the most infected population with a total of 110,646 cases.

Also steer clear of touching your mouth, eyes, and face in general. Always wash your hands after going to the bathroom, blowing your nose, going to a public place, and especially wash your hands before you eat.

Hand sanitizer DOESN’T work. Hand sanitizer only kills germs, the coronavirus is a VIRUS, not a germ; hand sanitizer will not kill the coronavirus. Washing your hands is the most effective way to kill the coronavirus.

You will know you have it when…

You can be infected for up to 14 days before you realize you have caught the virus. Some symptoms are a high fever, a cough, difficulty breathing and shortness of breath. Light cases of the coronavirus may resemble the flu or a bad cold. If you think you have the coronavirus consider calling the emergency room or urgent care before you just show up. That way they have time to prepare for if you have the coronavirus or not.

How the coronavirus is affecting the economy…

The coronavirus has already affected the economy a bit, the airports in the United States of America will no longer fly to China and the airline delta is considering cutting off all flying to Italy. Anyone that works for or at the airport is going to be affected, their paychecks or bonuses are going to go down majorly. Think about all of the people that will have to stay home from work, if they get quarantined. They would lose those paychecks, some families rely on those paychecks to keep their family living. Stocks have also been going down since the coronavirus has entered the United States of America.

Plastic Waste and It’s Effects

Plastic Waste

Are you still using plastic water bottles and plastic utensils like straws, forks, knives and spoons? You should really consider converting to a reusable version. There are so many negative effects of plastic on the earth.  Plastic pollutes our oceans, beaches, and fills our land fills with unnecessary waste. Plastic uses a lot of energy and water to produce. For an example to make a typical one liter plastic water bottle it takes around two liters of water during the process.  So one liter of water represents 3 liters of water consumption. While making that one liter of water it takes 4 million joules of energy to create and for every ton of plastic produced it creates three tons of C02.

Facts about plastic waste

There are five large floating plastic waste islands in the ocean right now. One of them is located halfway between Hawaii and California, this island of waste is double the size of Texas and has anything imaginable that is plastic related on it.

Plastic can take over 1,000 years to decompose in and our landfills are jammed packed with plastic.

Recycling one ton of plastic saves the equivalent of 1,000 to 2,000 gallons of gasoline.

10% of the plastic we use yearly ends up in the ocean. That’s equivalent to 700 billion plastic bottles in our oceans every year.

Since the 1950’s plastic has been produced.  That is about 8.3 billion tons of plastic produced worldwide.  That is equivalent to the weight of more than 800,000 Eiffel Towers.  And only 9% has been recycled.

There are some parts of the world where using plastic is illegal.  For example, Kenya has the toughest laws against plastic bags. If a Kenyan is caught producing plastic bags they will risk imprisonment for up to four years or fines of over $40,000.

One million plastic bottles are purchased every minute of the day.  That number is set to increase by 20% by 2021 if we as a world do not change.  And only 7% of those bottles were collected to be recycled in 2016.

Worldwide, around 2 million plastic bags are used every minute.  That would make it anywhere between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags used worldwide every year. For one example New York City uses about 23 billion plastic bags yearly.

6.90% of plastic polluting is carried to our oceans from just 10 rivers.  Researchers say that just 10 rivers across Asia and Africa carry 90% of plastics that end up in our oceans.
